moyan,
Just came across the following thread.
http://forum.edu-kingdom.com/viewthread.php?tid=2125815&extra=page%3D1
Does it answer part of our queries?

我問左老師了
test的分都要計
跟P2-4一樣, tobs, 平時dictation都計
呈上的分數就是report card 的分
PE, basic french, computer 不用呈分
但考直資中学所有科都會睇

moyan,
First of all, please do not say that.
I am just too lazy as I can type in English a bit faster than in Chinese.
To be honest, I hold my dictionary every time I type my post.
Nevertheless, you can find many grammatical mistakes in my posts. :loveliness:
With regard to your question, I am definitely not the right person to answer.
However, I managed to find some information from the internet below but I do not know how to explain to you in a professional way.
But hope this will still be useful for you.
ei⋅ther [ee-ther, ahy-ther]
–adjective
1. one or the other of two: You may sit at either end of the table.
2. each of two; the one and the other: There are trees on either side of the river.
–pronoun
3. one or the other: There are two roads into the town, and you can take either. Either will do.
–conjunction
4. (a coordinating conjunction that, when preceding a word or statement followed by the disjunctive or, serves to emphasize the possibility of choice): Either come or write.
–adverb
5. also; too; as well; to the same degree (used after negative clauses coordinated by and, or, or nor, or after negative subordinate clauses): He's not fond of parties, and I'm not either. If you don't come, she won't come either.
Singular or plural after either?
Either is normally used with a singular verb: Has either of you been to Paris? Either Lee or David is responsible. Informally, however, the plural is used when the choices are regarded collectively rather than individually, and it is quite natural to say Have either of you been to Paris?, which permits the possibility that both the people addressed have done so. When either...or... occurs with a mixture of singular and plural subjects, the verb traditionally agrees with the subject that is closer to it: Either Lee or his parents are at home.

Actually, Bluestar should be the best person to answer this question.
Hope she is online now and can enlighten us a bit more.

principal,
Your top hat is way too large for me !!
I usually know how to USE grammar, but can't explain the rules.
Anyway, see if my attempt can help :
either... or ... / neither ... nor ...
= alternatives
Either the monkey or the elephant ate the banana.
either of = either one or the other, but not both
eg Either one of you should drink the soup.
Either of you has the key to the room. Just give me the key.
Either one of them ate the banana.
Grateful if other parents could pls contribute to this grammar Q.

Bluestar,
You never let us down!!
And I seldom give away top hat to people with doubts.
Same case as yours.
I already “returned” most of the knowledge to my teachers and can barely remember certain grammar/rules by digging them out from “the bottom of my bed” and use it on working level only.
Sometimes, it becomes difficult to explain the rules to others in a systematic manner.

Should be 2 only ja woh.
Re case of using :
"among" many of them, but "between" the two of them.
(wonder if my comparison makes sense to you hehe)
Tingmum, you also give me a huge top hat woh !

TINGMUM,
Thank you for your reminder.
Bluestar,
Following TINGMUM's suggestion, I already threw away my old dictionary this morning and do not intend to buy a new one again, unless you are going to emigrate!!

principal, Tingmum,
Do you mean that you will depend on me to search my dictionaries whenever you have Q ?
I have 2 on the shelf behind me ga, one's Advanced Learner's Dict of Current Engl (ELBS ed) which I've been using since F1, the other one is a thick Webster which a friend bought for me in TW.
And then I sometimes use Wikipedia.

GOOD ENGLISH = USE DICTIONARY OFTEN
收到!
作者: principal 時間: 09-6-5 13:06
Bluestar,
No, just kidding with you.
I think dictionaries are very useful tool for both pupils and adults.
Although we can search any information we want from the internet now, I still love this traditional tool very much.
Our children are very lucky nowadays when it comes to the ease of searching the knowledge/information from the internet.
During the old days, when we were not sure about something, we had to call many classmates/friends or went to the libraries to look for some information in person.
Sometimes spent a lot of time for nothing.

Bluestar,
No, I have been using Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese dictionary for many years.
This one is good enough for normal use.
Encyclopedia Britannica is too difficult.
I reckon that one is mainly for linguist.
