My daughter went to summer school in UCLA, and the moms there also recommended Yorba Linda and Placentia.  Still with asians, but less competitive.

Another friend sis a lot of research and chose Dublin, CA. more remote part near San Francisco.

Yes actually I'm not anti- Asian...
I am just thinking, if I ever wanna move to US. I want my kids to also experience some US culture... In areas like diamond bad Arcadia and San Marino, you basically can live there without speaking English haha ...

I want them to pick up Chinese language and Chinese culture when they are younger in Hong Kong. And if we move back, definitely it will be the time for more western culture and English medium ~

Along the west coast is Laguna Beach, a good high school but expensive area.

我幫小朋友找學校的有以下條件:

(1)  學校是否有將Profile 放在學校網頁, 沒有Profile的我個人不會考慮。

(2)  學校的AP合格率, IB, ACT, SAT 平均分數。(如學校沒有提供AP課程, 好的大學是不會找這類畢業生, 除非運動方面很突出。)

(3)  學校校風。

(4)   學校每一屆學生合共拿多少獎學金, 部份學校有提供這類資料。

(5)   學校Profile 內學生拿到National Merit Scholarship 有幾多位。

(6)   學校亞太裔學生比例, 通常比例念高, 學校成績愈好, 另一原因請妳自己想, 是有關於族裔問題。

以下是南加州部份學校成績, 我自己比較心儀是Irvine 的University High School , Cerritos 的Whitney High School, Arcadia High School, Troy High School (Fullerton), 和Diamond Bar High School 南加其他學校我自己不太考慮, 妳自己比較一下便可以看到分別。

一定要報西岸的中學嗎?  我自己是不會考慮西岸的學校, 原因是:

(1) 我自已個人覺得幾個州的學區比較喜歡, 特別是學區大的我更喜歡, 因學區收取的房屋稅比較多, 這些學區可以用更多的錢去創辦不同特色高中及資優課程。

(2)  比較喜歡要考才能進的初中及高中, 如果住在那一區就可以讀的我也不太考慮, 西岸的比較少這類學校。

(3)  我自己比較喜歡New York校區, 德州 Dallas, Houston 校區, Virginia  的 Fairfax County 校區,  New Jersey 的Monmouth County 校區, 這些校區好的高中需要考試才能入讀, 而且競爭非常激烈。

I totally agree on you!

As for moving to other parts of the states, actually we are also flexible . But we like the west coast weather. So we may be more interested in moving to California, Oregon, North Carolina etc ....

I think New York is a bit dirty haha

I think u can also look into the crime rate in the city official website. But as far as I know , Arcadia is one of the best.

It was once nominated as one of the top 10 locations to raise kids in the US.

My friend lives in Arcadia, many asians, cut throat competitive.  Beautiful and safe area, but houses very very expensive.

Oh yea!!!! House there is quite pricey!

Arcadia actually has lots of Taiwanese in particular. It's known as "the little Taiwan"

在美國選學校, 除了治安之外, 還有其他要考慮的因素是我考慮之列:

1)  就業機會

2)  稅率:  目前, 只有Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington 及 Wyoming 只需要繳付聯邦個人入息稅 (Individual Income Tax), 不需要繳付該州個人入息稅。 以德州為例, 因很多石油公司總部都設置在德州, 所以德州政府光是賺公司稅(Franchise Tax) 已經夠了, 可是, 學校的收入來源(不光是德州, 很多州都是這樣) 是來自地稅或房屋稅, 只要閣下買了房子便要交稅, 房子愈貴的地稅愈貴。順帶一提, 美國的住宅如是高樓大廈(high rise) 或是townhouse, 還要考慮管理費, 其中大廈最貴, 很多都要付一千至二千美元或以上(每月)。

3)  薪資

4)  公共設施, 有些州有附設兒童博物館、歷史博物館、科學博物館等等.... 有些城市或小鎮根本沒有這些設施, 甚至是連圖書館都冇, 這些我也不會選擇。

5)  查一下在妳想住的地方有沒有性罪犯。

我在德州讀研究所, 曾經在加州洛杉磯工作, 我個人不是太喜歡加州, 每天在Downtown 上班都要經過十號公路, 很塞車, 花了我一段時間上下班, 工資沒有比德州多, 我太太的工資(在同一機構工作)甚至是比德州少, 又要交州個人入息稅, 房子價值又貴, 可是房子品質又沒有比德州大和好, 結果我們都般回去德州。

6)  如果是考慮小朋友的讀書, 除了看看以上我選校策略之外, 我還會比較每一個州的529計劃 (是州政府辦的, 不是私人辦的, 有些州的529沒有手續費), 529即是幫小孩儲蓄上大學用的錢, 在小孩上大學之前, 每月月供一些錢, 唔駛到時一次過取一筆錢出來俾小朋友讀大學, 有些州的529計劃是收到閣下的錢用作投資, 賺到利息不用付資本利得(Capital gain) 稅, 但是我怕投資失敗, 到時渣都冇得剩, 所以我不會買這類的529計劃。

由於我姐也是住在德州, 我幫她兩位女兒買了德州529 名叫Texas Tomorrow Fund, 參考:  http://www.texastomorrowfunds.org/  每月月供五百元, 合共一千元, 總共要儲十年, 州政府幫我把錢儲起, 當中賺到利息Interest Income不用付入息稅, 當小朋友上大學時便可以用這筆錢讀美國任何一間私立大學, 如果讀公立的便會退還一部份錢給我, 如果我只幫他們在未來只報考德州公立大學的話, 我每個月每位只付一百美元而矣, 真的很平宜。州政府後來發現賠本, 所以後來Texas Tomorrow Fund取消, 現在已經改成Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan   參考:  http://www.tgtp.org/ , 也是一樣儲蓄計劃, 不過每個月月付比較貴了。

建議剛移民去美國, 先租一個單位, 熟悉該區環境再買房子也不會太遲, 我不建議到 www.craigslist.com 跟個別包租公租房, 到  http://www.apartmentguide.com/   找房子, 房東是大集團 / 大財團, 這樣租房會比較放心。

寫到這裡, 下次再詳談那一區治安比較好和那一個學區比較好。

UC Berkeley 附近的房租很貴!  住學校比較平宜嗎? 建議先住校一年再作決定。
