My daughter is now attending P2 in a local English school and would like to tranfer her to VSA... does anyone know if there is a very long waitling list?

She can speak fluent English but not so good Putonghua.  Will she still have a chance to get in?

Pls comment.

Thanks

Hi Ving

To be honest, I don't know much about international schools at all... but there is such a lengthy waitling list in the ESF schools so my friend suggested me to try VSA.  She told me already the administration in VSA is a mess but the teachers are very nice and really have patience to guide the kids...

I am just desperate to transfer my daughter to any international on HK side.  I would love to hear your advice and more school info.  Pls feel free to pm me :)

Many thanks

VSA is not an international school. The school will send letter to parents in April/ May asking whether their kids will stay in the school next year. After that, it will become clear how many vacancy they will have.

Hi cherubic

I am surprise that VSA is not an international school as even the news stated that VSA is an international school ?!

Can you pls tell me more about their Chinese syllabus?

Thanks

According to EDB, VSA is a private independent school.  However, there is no hard and fast rule on the definition of international schools in Hong Kong.  VSA is one of the IB world schools and has just been awarded membership of the Council of International Schools.  You can say that the curricula and teaching staff of VSA are definitely international though the students are mostly local.
The Chinese syllabus on average is equivalent to local standard and bilingual education is emphasized.  However, the reality is that many students prefer English over Chinese.

Hi loklokBB,

Why you would dedparate to transfer your children to Internal HK? I think you need to make up your mind to study in local school or international school as they are totally different. Once you change from the current local school to international school or private school, it is not easy to change back to local school. So again, you need to have a firm position and belief first.

Talking about VSA, I think there are hundred pros and cons. My viewpoint is that it might be better than ISF as the school fee for ISF is very very high. And VSA is in the stage of improving, but of course I don't know how much time it takes to change to good. As there are too much compaints about the school in the past by parents.

Hi loklokBB,

Hi loklokBB, i agree with Ving that perhaps you should first be clear about what you are looking for in an international school.  is it the method of teaching, the language environment, the type and amount of homework, your expectation of the chinese level, and (though a bit early in your case) whether you plan to have your kid study in university in HK or overseas etc.

majority of VSA's graduates will continue study overseas and I think the same in other international schools.  universities in HK currently only accept IB (i.e. VSA's cirriculum) students with very high marks, e.g UST will accept students with 38 points and above and the requirements for hot subjects will be at least 42 plus (45 is the full mark).  i don't have information about say GCE a level and i expect similar situation.  personally i think studying overseas provides a good personal training for a kid.

despite this long term plan, if you buy the idea of teaching our kids to become lifelong learners in a bilingual environment, VSA would be one of the choices.  the whole teaching concept is enquiry based and students do need to think and plan when they do their homework and projects.  some parents consider the primary years too easy and students do not learn much as compared to local schools.  again this depends on your expectation: whether you want the hardware (i.e. the knowledge) or the software (i.e. the research skill and presentation skill etc).  in any event, the secondary years of IB are very very demanding.

Yes Ving

I fully understand that once my daughter changes from the current local school to international school, she will not be able to change back to local school. (No one wants to keep changing school la...)

I am very firm with my belief but the ESF waiting list is just too long so would like to apply a few more IS...

Thanks anyway

是相比local school/ IS?
