I think we need to rethink what we want from our children and what kind of childhood life we want them to have.
We want them to learn, but at the same time be happy, right?
If we are stuffing their free time with all kinds of classes, we are in fact extending the school hours. Tired children seldom have quality sleep at night and the next day they would not be able to focus in class. Would too "full" a timetable or day give a negative effect to the learning or focusing ability at school?
If your child is really weak in a particular area and really need extra help (eg extra after school tutoring), I am sure your child's teacher will tell you. Until then, just relax.
We are parents of our children but when it comes to learning, I think teachers probably know the children better. But until the teacher points out that a child really need extra help, I think he is probably doing fine.
There is no need to follow what others are doing.
PS. I agree that many children would benefit if they are attending extra Chinese classes though.
