Some reference information for the past few years:
2009/10 K1 students total: 47,109 (2006 birth count = 65,600) 72% of birth count enter K1 in HK
2008/09 K1 students total: 45,236 (2005 birth count = 57,100) 79% of birth count enter K1 in HK
2009/10 K2 students total: 47,403
2008/09 K2 students total: 46,149
Based on roughly 75% for estimation:
Birth count for 2007 = 70,900 (est. K1 intake = 53,175)
Birth count for 2008 = 78,800 (est. K1 intake = 59,100)
Birth count for 2009 = 82,100 (est. K1 intake = 61,575)
Worth noticing is there are total 950 kindergartens in HK. Even if I assume average minimum 60 students (very conservative number!!! i.e. just 2 K1 classes per year) there are already capacity for 57,000 students. If I add additional one class capacity, then the number will be 85,500, well cover the birth count even if all the mainland babies come back to HK to go to kindergarten.
