Good news just to share ...... I just got the Flyer result for my daughter.  She got 13 shields!  (She was in K2,  5 years 3 months old when taking the exam.  I just let her try to test her level.  I am really glad with her result!)  Hope this can help in her primary school application ..........

Thanks.

Actually, there is no special secret.  I downloaded the sample paper for Flyer for her to try some months ago, and found that she knew around 80% of it.  So I enrolled the exam for her to try.  She did not attend any training course.  I just bought a couple of past paper for her to practise before the exam.

But my daughter likes reading very very much.  I think she learns a lot of vocab and grammar via reading.

She lost 2 shields in listening.  She said she could hear the answers, but could not write fast enough.  I think this is a physical limitation.  After all, she cannot write very fast in her age.

Thanks again.

I think all parents in BK here care about the education of their kids and all wish that their kids can go to a good primary school.  I also hope that my daughter can be admitted to a good school that fits her.

But frankly, I am not quite sure how much the Flyer result can help.  Most schools decide based on interview performance rather than academic achievements ........

Thanks tsewangok.

Yes, my daughter likes writing too.  She started writing her diary some months ago - just a few sentences describing what she did and her feeling on that day.  But it is a long way to go before she can really write a book, ha ha.

She took Starter with 15 shields in April, but did not take the Mover.

We have not enrolled her for any speech / poem competition because frankly we think that most competitions are organised by some training institutions and we don't want her to take those training courses solely for winning an award in a competition.

She has taken some Trinity exams, but again, we did not let her take any preparatory course.  We think she'd better use her time to learn something she does not know, e.g. swimming, piano, ballet, etc. rather than training course for an exam.

Thank you very much for all your compliment.

Frankly, we dare not say that we as parents have lots of contributions.  In fact, every kid has his or her strength, and we thank God for giving our daughter strength in some areas.

Actually, we are not trying to push her to be smarter (we don't want to be "tiger parents").  We are in fact trying our best to give her the necessary support (not too much, not too less) so that she can grow and develop according to her own pace and inclination.   We hope she can continue to enjoy learning and can face the inevitable competition with a relaxed mindset after she grows up ..............

Hope we are doing the right things.

The age 9 - 12 is only a suggestion by British Council.  If the kids have reached 5 years old, they can join any level of Cambridge Exam.  My daughter enrolled via British Council.  She did not enrol via any other centre nor take any course from any centre.

Well, when she took the exam in June, she could write English words, though not very nicely.  However, she could not write very fast, so she lost 2 shields in listening because the next question came before she could write the answer ......

My daughter was 5 years 1 month when she took the Starters.  We enrolled for Flyers before the Starters result was released.   The schedule seemed tight because we hoped she could have the results all ready for primary school application in September.

I downloaded the past papers for Movers & Flyers for her to try.  Actually Movers & Flyers are quite similar.  (You can have a feel from the past papers)  Since she could do Flyers, I just let her try.

Just wish to seek your opinion, how did you decide after the Starters if your dg is going to take Movers or Flyers?
What is the level difference between these two?

She has several offers so far, and still waiting for a couple of schools for the results.  But I think the Flyers result may not help much for some top schools actually.

Thanks, amychu69.  But my daughter does not have much 鬥心.  She only regards the exam as a game.  We did not give her any pressure, because we only wished to see how much she could reach.  Nobody would blame her if she could not perform well in the exam.

Hi janeba,

Frankly I don't know how helpful the Flyer exam is.  I guess most schools focus on interview performance.  If the interview tests academic level (e.g. Chinese, English, Maths), then the kids that have good Flyer result may logically perform well in at least the English part.   So I can't tell whether the schools really select the kids due to the Flyer result, or just based on interview performance.

Personally I think the Flyer exam can tell me the English level of my daughter, but I don't suggest pushing the kids to take the exam (esp. via training course) solely for the sake of P1 application.

My daughter luckily got some offers from schools that test the kids academic level during interview (e.g. SFA, CKY, TSL).

點評
