If he achieved double distinction in Maths and problem solving, it's a great achievement and he can apply a summer program in Imperial College this summer. I know a girl got in BPS, but I am sure her ranking is high in the school.

I think this is not very useful. The test is too easy. If I am not mistaken, close to 1/3 of participants got distinction.

I just say he can use the qualification to apply some summer programs, I didn't say it's useful for secondar admission. If your kid got double distinction, still an achievement.

For my son's school, 6 kids got an interview from DBS early last month. All of them got world class arena distinctions even some's ranking is not top 10 of the school. Some top 10 kids who didn't get an distinction in world class arena do not have any interview so far.

Thanks for your information. He only attended Maths test but he got distinction. By the way, does your son study in Kowloon Tong? I learnt from my son that 6 schoolmates were also offered from DBS but some of them have 特異功能.

wildcat_hk,
Yes. He also studies in Kowloon Tong. Do u mind pm me your son's name? They might be in the same class.
DBS altogether interviewed 6 kids based on academic side and 5 kids based on sports side so far. 4 kids of academic side were given the offer. 2 of them got double distinctions while the other 2 got distinction in maths only. For the 5 kids of sports side, all 5 were given offer but one was also given offer from LS. So only 4 from sports accepted the offer. Now altogether 8 kids holding the offers.

One Maths competition organised by Po Leung Kuk called Hong Kong Primary School Competition, all students are top 3-5% of the school in Maths. The final ranking is represented their HK ranking in Maths. I feel this competition is more representative than other competition.
Another one is Talent Search of EPGY.... If you get higher distinction, you can apply those summer programs in Stanford.

作者: ANChan59 時間: 12-1-17 14:24
My son pretty good in Maths and sit for most Maths competitions as mentioned in this thread.
After some summer program's in some top notch international universities in USA and Uk, he changed his view in Maths in terms of application and career.
Some competition results come from drilling, that's not his cup of tea, because he is lazy and prefer do more with less.
He attended two program's in Imperial College, he visited Barclays Bank and got some understanding on application of Maths in investment models. In the Innovation program, he learnt how to prepare a business plan and do some pilot business in the campus. He discovered do calculation and as good as you can come up ideas, well prepare and well present.... He can be an entrepreneur, he also accepted that upto some level language proficiency may be more critical than other subjects.
I hope you all know why I put great summer programs in front of Maths competitions........

ANChan59,
Thanks for your sharing. What programs did your son attend in Imperial College when he was 14? My son also received invitation to join Imperial College's program when he was in P6. At that time, he was not ready to go abroad to study alone though I found some programs quite interesting. So we didn't push him. Later we thought of trying Johns Hopkins U Summer Program jointly offered with HKUST in HK but time clashed with other engagement. He is now a F2 boy and maybe a good time to reconsider those programs offered by Imperial College or Johns Hopkins. Do you have any views on Johns Hopkins Summer Program run in HKUST campus too? Are they equally good when compared with Imperial College?
My son's interest in Maths mainly affected by his Maths Team teacher in primary school (a young, energetic, humorous guy, major in Physics) and reading quite a number of Maths books by Ian Stewart, Martin Gardner .. etc. His primary school didn't push them for open competitions and so during P5 to P6 he only participated in two Maths group competitions. The only individual Maths test he joined was World Class Arena for aged 12-14 when he was in P5 2nd Term. To my son, I think inspiring teacher, stimulating books, as well as like-minded peers are the main reasons for his ongoing interest in Maths so far, while competitions or tests are only by-product (he was not keen on). I think good Maths courses or summer programs would help him explore more what his real interest is in.
Just my some sharings.

My replies as follow:
What programs did your son attend in Imperial College when he was 14?
Maths:- Problem Solving - wk 1
Business & Marketing:- From Innovation to Market - wk 2
Do you have any views on Johns Hopkins Summer Program run in HKUST campus too?
I highly recommend the program and some of my friends' children attended the programs and the feedback are good. One girl even comes back from California to attend the creative writing program.
Are they equally good when compared with Imperial College?
Imperial may have more cultural elements as students are come from worldwide and the visits can be inspiring to them. If affordable, one summer in HKUST and then Imperial...... or vise versa
Pls refer to the following link to check the programs of the summer school, pretty not the same as previous years. STEM World Summer School

In case you have further query, let me know or PM me.

hi cowboymama, maybe I can chip in my 2 cents here. My son attended the John Hopkins U CTY summer program last year and he thoroughly enjoyed it. He joined using JHU's own SCAT test scores but I know results from World Class Tests can also be used for applying to thier Maths and Science programs in HK. My son joined the Science and Engineering program at the HKUST campus. He was there for 3 weeks and he said he enjoyed every minute of it. The instructors and Teaching Assistants are all from US and very friendly, course material interesting and challenging and he got to learn together with a lot of bright and smart kids from the region. His classmates include kids from HK, Korea, India etc. We struggled between HK campus and US campuses but since that was his first time on a program like this and he was only 10 then, we opted for the HKUST campus. We may be sending him to US this year for thier summer programs there. check out the following website for more info:

Glad to know parents also utilise the tests and competitions to facilitate the further development of their chikdren's talent, not just stop at school and university admission. Bravo.

Wish you Happy Lunar New Year!!
