Can any parents whose kids attending last year interview can share their experience?

Youma, my son will have interview on Feb 6, how about your son?

Any ideas about the no. of kids to be invited for 1st interview? The school has mentioned this during the admission talk but I forgot the no.

no ah, 2 of my son's classmates havn't received the letter up till now, so not all applicants are eligible for interview....

That's history 3 years ago, 90-100 vacancies previously for 1000 applicants. Now only 40 vacancies, so they shortlist for interview like St Paul Co-edu.

My son had the interview and the questions were:
1. If your the Chief Executive of HKSAR, what do you want to change? (English, Leung Ka Kit competed with Donald Tsang for Chief Executive.)
2. 你對杏林子認識有幾多? 講講佢既著作?(她在我兒子面試前一星期逝世)
3. Read articles in both English and Chinese and then asked some questions related to articles.

1200 人 apply, 只 in 300位左右. 本來只收28人, 但會加多十幾個位, 即大約30幾個.

My son's interview last year consisted of two parts: one by an English teacher while another one by a Chinese teacher. He had to read passages and phrases (some words which he didn't know how to pronounce) and answer questions in relation to them. Then some personal information questions.

Yes, both are Band 1. One with sports awards within Shatin district with academic ranking around 15 within school, the other one with academic only

I shall try if I were you. This is also a training & tesing for our boys. You can make decision if DBS accepts your boy later. Unless you put LSC at a much higher rank than DBS, doesn't like Direct Subsidy School & busy on the weekend, it worths trying. It's my view only.

By the way, when did your son attend the first interview & 2nd interview at La Sa respectively? My son attended interview on Jan 29 while my son's classmate only finished the interview on Feb 1, we are waiting for their calls these days. Thanks for your sharing in advance.

Why not have a trial?

DBS will have 2nd interview: audition for musical instruments or trial for sports.

we are going for La Salle 2nd interview as well. They offer 2nd interview to my son. Does it mean he is accepted by LS already? Would you mind to tell me how the 2nd interview like? What did they ask? And how long did the interview last?

今年既TALK, 張校長說今年係收得最少既一年, 因舊拔係最後一年上, 跟著同佢脫"歐", 說 : 啦! 家長如果出年來會多60個位. 聽佢既口氣, 以後唔會比舊拔有任何優惠. 佢話估計有1200人APPLY (跟舊年DATA), 只IN三百左右, 唔IN, 唔冼比$, 慳番50蚊. 因男拔話過要小班教學,張校長說原則上收28位, 但今年特別每班收多幾位來多謝各方面既支持喎! 等等.... 如每班多收幾位, 佢即場叫人計好似只能最多 40左右.

我個仔今個星期6 IN.

La Sa 2nd interview 分開兩部分，首先小朋友會和Brother 會面，他只是圍繞你們提交的資料來發問(實際應是互相了解)，如果小朋對自己了解的話，是很容易應付。接着與家長面談，大家會討論小朋的點滴，氣氛和諧，Brother非常友善，最後當然會暗示暑假會再見面啦，希望能幫到大家，good luck!

We just came back from DBS interview. I asked if there will be 2nd interview. The lady staff said they will only arrange sort of 2nd interview to those good at sports or music.

We also finished the interview this morning. My boy said the English part was not very difficult but the Chinese part contains some difficult words that he didn't know how to read (he then just made a wild guess).

When will the 2nd interview be announced & schedule? Mid March? When will the result finalize? Anyboby knows?

Hi, DKmum and SaSaMummy,

My kid is now studying in G. 7 (i.e. F. 1) in DBS.

The first interview took place on 14th February last year while the 2nd interview was held on 28th Feb.  He was asked to do audition at the 2nd interivew.

During the audition, besides playing one piece of music which he practised beforehand at home, the interviewer also asked him to do one extra piece.  He was then asked some  personal questions and also questions relating to the muscial instrument which he played. I am not sure how many were selected for the 2nd in.  He was offered a place by the end of March.

He enjoys his school life very much.  There are only 4 newcomers in his class.  He mixes well with his classmates.

There are not many homework but lots of projects.  Out of 18 subjects, only Maths and P.E. have no project work.  Some projects are done individually while others are in groups.

The school emphasizes very much on discipline which I appreciate very much.  There are strict school rules which students have to stick to.
Academic-wise, his classmates are all very bright.
My kid likes the school very much.

Thanks goodmum97. Since some DSS school will release result earlier, just if I accept offer from that DSS school, can I change my mind if we have offer from DBS later?

Surely you can.

My son got the offer from St. Paul Co-edu in mid March last year. When DBS gave us the offer in end March, we just went back to SPCC and got back the 'Primary 6 Student Record Form'. Of course, you could provide them with a letter stating the reason for withdrawal politely.

Would you mind share your views why eventually you and your boy chose DBS instead of SPCC then? My boy has also applied both schools and he has some music training and join outside Wind Band. He already took 1st interview yesterday in DBS and is now waiting for interview letter from SPCC.

小朋友覺得英文較淺, 讀文章可以, 問內容可以. 最後問平日喜好, 空閒時間活動, 電腦遊戲的好處及壞處. 都順利回答. 老師評語 "好" 此部份可能勉強合格.

綜合上述兩部份, 相信小朋友的成功機會很微

請問各位面試題目是否相近, 從老師評語中是否看出機會率?

My boy's question:
English: read passage, not difficult, then ask whether he likes his primary school or not, what type of activities he joined in school

Chinese: read passage, with many difficult words, then the teacher asked him to pick a card from the table, the cards contain some chinese words which are very difficult, he needed to read, explain the meaning & how to find the words from the dictionary. Then ask him to name different type of 修辭手法, ask him to give examples as well.

My boy's chinese is quite good but he said the chinese part is very difficult. He hasn't repeated the teacher's comments to me, so I don't know his chance. Anyway, he tries his best, so no regret, just wait & see!

Thank you very much for your sharing! Your boy must be very smart as both elite schools offered him a F1 place last year. I don't know whether my boy will have chance for music audition in end Feb in DBS. Hope that the date will not clash with SPCC interview (27 Feb).

BTW, as to your boy's audition in DBS last year, was the examiner Mr Ronnie Cheng, Dean of Culture? Just curious to know.

Hi, SaSaMummy,

There are 6 classes, namely D, S, P, J, M and T.

Top 50% of students will be allocated to classes D, S and P.
Out of these students, the best 18 students in each of the core subject (i.e. English, Chinese and Maths) will form a stream, namely Stream X.

Students are allocated as follows:
The top 43 boys in English will be allocated to Class D;
The top 43 boys in Chinese of the remaining students will be allocated to Class S and the remaining students within this group including those taking French will be allocated to class P.

The group of students attaining below 50% or students who fail in one core subject will be streamed randomly to J, M or T classes.
Students in these classes are permitted to attend at most two of the remedial classes for English, Chinese and Maths.

Students have lots of projects and presentation work.
In the second term, they are also required to write script of at least 10 pages long for drama class.
I find that my kid’s English, computer and presentation skill as well as self-confidence have improved a lot.

All in all, I am very satisfied with the kid studying in DBS.

DBS has its own streaming assessment for class allocation purpose. It is held before the date set for the HKAT for PS1.

The assessment consists of 3 core subjects. They are much more difficult than HKAT for PS1.

My son luckily gets the chance for DBS audition on 6 March (Also he’ll take the SPCC interview on 27 Feb). According to your son’s last year experience in DBS audition, if you don’t mind, I would like to ask the following questions:

(1)
Was the audition conducted in English or Cantonese? How long the audition took?
(2)
For the duration of the two pieces of music, what is the appropriate time?
(3)
As to questions relating to music, did Mr Cheng ask about music theory? What kind of questions did he ask?
(4)
Does your son need to join the orchestra compulsorily due to his music talent now or can he choose to join it or not of his own free will? If he does join orchestra, should he often need to skip lessons to prepare for music festival or other competitions? Does this affect his study or not?

The questions were not related to musical theory. They were just some personal questions and some questions on his musical instrument.

Students are free to join the orchestra if they like. There is no compulsory issue. My kid hasn't joined the orchestra.

I'm sorry that I have no idea about sports trial.

They have drama class every alternate week. It is taught by a native English speaker. They have learnt different drama terms, important criteria/techniques of writing short storeis, basic story template etc. During class, they were given opportunities to develop their creativity and self-confidence by acting and performing. Each lesson is interesting and fun-filling.

The script is done on individual basis, not group project.

Hope this clarifies your queries.
