Hkis is regard as one of the top IS in Hk, but with American culture, very westernised, strong in academics and sports. I cannot comment on ESF as I don’t have personal experience in it. The most big difference is, HKIS is AP school while ESF Is IB school. Go to visit their campus, speak to the teachers and staff, it will help to give you more insight. I do the same years ago and I can narrow down my choices quickly.
Find a school fits your family best is more important then to just find a “good” school.

Agreed, a ‘good’ school for one child/family may not be a ‘good’ school for your child and your family.
In addition to the curriculum, eca, school facilities etc, the most obvious differentiating factor between the two schools that pop out to me would be the fees. ESF is one of the relatively inexpensive i
IS whilst HKIS is relatively more expensive. Location would be another factor as ESF has various locations. For me, the other most important thing is whether my child/family would get along or fit in with the other families. I would think ESF is more working middle class as it’s cheaper (and middle class local hk people love it too because it’s great bang for your buck/good value - relatively cheap but good IB results). But HKIS would tend to attract richer families/expats.

I would say the majority of the more expensive schools all have very rich families. Those are usually the people who don't need to worry about money and are able to splurge and invest in these types of high-end schools. CIS, HKIS, GSIS, even CDNIS I would say is getting to that level.
Most average families would be cost concious and would focus more on value for money. Which means, if your aim is to get your child the best platform to get into a good university in Canada, USA, UK, etc... Then honestly why would you want to pay so much money to HKIS/CIS/GSIS to yield that result? It may be more pragmatic to go to a more affordable school and still reach the same result.
If you're aim for your child is for HARVARD, YALE, COLUMBIA, OXFORD, CAMBRIDGE, etc.. All these elitists schools will require you to most likely enrol in those top international schools for a "better" chance. it's still not guaranteed admissions, but at least you know the probability is a bit higher than if you went to a "cheaper" IS school.

Difference in school fees among these few IS:
Say for primaries school fees:
CIS 270k
GSIS160 K
CDNIS 160 K
HKIS 240K
Even ESF now will be closed to 120 K
(IB curriculum itself is intrinsically expensive, even local schools with IB usually charge around 100K)

HKIS is a good school , especially if you target US unis in the future.
For those who haven’t decided where to go yet, IB will be more versatile for HK/UK/US.
That’s my thinking so I will choose ESF over HKIS. Also location is another big concern.

For HKIS, I think you are quoting the fee for one semester only. Full year is 200k+

I did a simple table to compare the tuitions. This is inclusive of all annual levies and non-refundable debts.
I did not include any debts that were refundable, since you would get the money back anyways and your only opportunity cost is the interest lost and inflation; for locking in that money.

VSA year 12 is equivalent to ESF year 13. I think ESF's fees for IBDP (i.e. years 12 and 13) should be the same.
https://www.esf.edu.hk/fees-2022-23-esf-schools/
Also, ESF's current fees for years 8 and above are still net of government subsidies, which will decrease gradually year by year.

For GSIS there is option of purchasing the refundable debenture (500k) and no need to pay the capital levy.
