I get so much confused by some local friends when they asked me: why do you coach your kids mandarin at home while you are native speaker already. No I don’t coach them on mandarin at home, I coach them on Chinese in mandarin. And Chinese not = Cantonese (emoji)
中文 = 中國語文 = 中國語言文學
It can be learnt either in Cantonese or in mandarin.
