To study law or medicine ?

My nephew is now studying LAW in HKU as the first year. On the other hand, he has just been notified that he is also accepted by University of Sydney to study medicine in the coming term at January 2006. He is now in the cross road. It is very hard for him to make up the mind! In fact, to be a Lawyer or Doctor is good. He is no strong views or preference. However, the study of medicine in Sydney will involve a lot of money. Luckily, his family can support him with no problem.

His father said that if his son had no strong views in choosing study Law or Medicine. He would like to treat this as an investment for his son’s study. He would like to make the decision depends on the expected income of a Lawyer and a Doctor. I have argued that it may have a very great different in these two professionals. There are some hearsays about the income :-

The income of a solicitor in law firm will be about $ 50,000 to $ 200,000 per month depends on experience.

The income of a Barrister will be $ 50,000 to $200,000 per day in court. The income can be $ 3 – 400,000 per month.

The income of a Doctor in Hospital will be from $ 50,000 to $ 250,000 per month. depends on experience.

The income of a Doctor who running his own clinic can be $ 100,000 to 500,000 per month.

Dear Moms, do you have any ideas to the incomes of a doctor or lawyer ? Any comments to the above quoted figures ?

I'd advice your nephew to visit the court and hospital to picture out his future career rather than looking at the figures.

Another consideration is, does he want to study aboard? It's a good life experience.

He himself should find out what's his interest rather than the decision by his father based on $.

Being a doctor holds the big responsibility of taking care of patients and their lives.

If he has no strong preference, that means he doesn't really have a strong desire and passion to become a doctor, right?

In that case, I'd say he should become a lawyer instead.  Otherwise, if he were to be a doctor some day, his patients won't really benefit a lot!

I think if the father regards it as an investiment, time and the period of study is also a matter. Moreover, the most important factor is the charactor of the son. I think both career is professional but it really depends on what he thinks. I believe he has his own mind.

Agree with what Lamblamb said.  The sense of responsibility of being a doctor is really important since it may affect one's life.  If he doesn't have any patience or dedication to the industry, he should choose the alternative one (i.e. to be a lawyer...).  Bear in mind that a doctor will need to work on irregular hour and it won't be an easy job!  Although someone working in law industry might need to work at night sometimes, the possibility & frequency might not be so high like being a doctor I think!

In HK cannot receive any doctor directly without examination, so if your nephew come back HK need to re-examination of HK Medical Board, it's not easy to past the examination, and he may be also need to re-house training in HK, if He will not back to HK it's no big deal, and the salary of DR in Hospital is 34000-50000 of new contract staff,so I think your salary scale is not correct,and the Dr run the business is not easy also,need to join the group,and if he want to start his own business is not easy also.
may be no 100000 per months,
and If he want to be a specialist in HK at least 6-7 training after 6 year medical student.
And HKU LAW is a good subject also,let him serious think before made any decision
