Any parents whose children are in NS or RC in FIS?

I am not sure whether we shall apply for NS or RC for my kid, mainly because Chinese language is taught as the third language in FIS. My kid is half French, and we will probably move back to UK in a few years.

I'd like him to build up a good Chinese foundation while we are in Hong Kong. He is currently in PN in a local school and also taking a few French classes. He understands Chinese and French well but mainly speak in English. If we keep him in LS for one more year, would it make different for his Chinses learning?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks! May I ask why? Is it because RC may be more difficult to get in than NS?

Sorry I missed your point. You are asking international stream or French stream in FiS, right?

I thought you’re asking RCHK or FIS before. Sorry.

I think she is asking K1( “nursery school” in FIS), or K2 (“reception class”
in FIS) .
To the host: Frankly I don’t think the exposure of one extra year of ?Cantonese will help much in his Chinese learning in long run, especially he will move to UK without further exposure to retain it. I would switch to FIS as soon as possible, as the learning environment will be happier and more fun. Childhood experience is precious and every year counts.

No worries.
I'd like to get some advice about whether we should apply for Nursery in FIS for my kid or wait till reception year to let him have more exposure to Chinese. Since   we settled in the UK before relocating to HK and we won't live in France, the international stream in FIS seems to be more adequate in our case.

My son is half British, we started PN in international kindergarten (the IB one, not the local kindergarten called themselves “international”).

At home we expose him into Cantonese environment 70% of his time, my husband talks to him in English. And apparently he picks up English better than Cantonese, but fairly speaking, he is good in both in speaking point of view at the moment. According to the teachers, he can switch from one language to another without any issue.

We have applied for FIS NS 23/24 and he is now attending to French playgroup once a week since April. At the same time, we started Mandarin class once a week in this month.

Honestly speaking, I personally do not think 1 more year in local school will give him huge impact in Chinese if you or your family do not speak with him. Chinese foundation can be built only if the family pay afford. And FIS NS will escalate to RC and they will only intake 1 class RC, so I will go for NS for sure.

Eventually we will go back to UK, same as you.

One more year in local school might give him a chance to explore more Chinese but personally I dont think it will make a hugh different. You might actually consider private Chinese class for that matter.

Thanks chima_pigpig  and ycyewing for your opinions.

We have adopted 'One person, One Language' method since the day one he was born. However, most of the people around us speak English, English has become his dominant language. He only replies in English when we speak to him either in Chinese or French, which is a bit frustrating. Like you suggested, I shall start to look for private Chinese classes and spend more efforts on it.

We have adopted 'One person, One Language' me ...

In my family, my parents and I speak to my son in Cantonese, and my husband will speak to him in English. Sometimes I will mix of both.

He knows I understand English so sometimes he answers me with English, and at the time I will ask him “xxx 中文係咩呀?” Or “你同媽媽講中文吖” then he will switch back to Cantonese. TBH, they like to speak in English coz it is easier, so you sometimes need to force him to speak in a mild way.

The mandarin class is for him to learn speaking mandarin and traditional Chinese. FYI
