Junior King’s School Canterbury

My son is going to study Year 7 in Sep 2018.  Is anyone being study in this school?  Want to see if we can join from / to airport?  
Any homestay family that suggested ?

其實我仔很不捨得離開Kingswood, 初時我仔很抗拒考其他學校，但因為我覺得他現正還細，能夠容易考上排名高些的學校，有助於提升再來將Top U 的競爭力，所以我就說服我仔除考Kingswood Year 7 外，再試試考JKS。

JKS 可以直上 King’s Canterbury (senior School for y9-13).

要是year 7 考的话应是 guaranteed place to year 9 的。兒子当时的offer 是这样的，我们知道同年另一同學的offer 亦是一样的。不過，仍要考common entrance (除非是在scholarship set), 這主要是 year 9 分 set用途。
聽兒子说大部分都升上Senior King’s。有些同学去了single sex 的學校如Benenden, Tonbridge, Charterhouse ...， 亦有些去了less academic 的學校。

請問JKS 內的boarding life 如何？有沒有bully 呢？JKS 對於小朋友的學習情況會不會很貼身呢？見到你提到有些小朋友到Year 9 會去less academic 的學校，是否King’s 很demanding 呢？請問housemistress 是否會幫忙安排小朋友安排一起坐的士來回學校與機埸呢？會不會有很多雜費呢？我太多問題了，不好意思，謝謝你！

1) 關於boarding life, 我問了兒子，他的回答蠻有趣。“ At first have to get used to it, then it feels good, at the end you just want to leave coz you know Senior King’s is way better. Senior King’s would treat you as a big boy or little man, not big kid”

His views are a) first term gonna be hard; b) take the opportunity that there are quite a lot of new comers and make friends; c) obey the teachers, or at least pretend to, so that they like you and life will be much easier; d) act innocent basically; e) don’t just stick with Asians but make friends with everyone that you will be liked by the School.

JKS 的 boarding population 很細，男生只幾十人，由Y5-8.

據兒子說year 7 有點悶，空閒時間較多，year 8 開始就是 senior school life 的預演，忙很多。

2) 關於bully, to some extent, it depends on how you interpret.  兒子 year 9 時我問他要否帶零食回校，他說不用了，因為senior 會要求分享的，senior 要的不能不給。One may interprets as bullying but he saw it more like a house culture. 兒子在JKS 兩年，沒有聽説過有bully 的事情。 相信bully 事件發生在year 7/8 的機率會較低，因為他們已經是大仔了。另外，junior school 一般對 bully 是不太容忍的。

3) 關於學習，JKS 在 Maths, Eng and modern language 方面是按能力分組別的，英語非母語的會安排EAL 輔助

4）每所 junior school 都會有畢業生往別的學校升學的。

5) 關於機場接送，你到時候直接給電郵 admin office （不知是否仍是Mrs Jerman)。由于JKS 的 boarding population 較細，而且學生年紀較少，不能獨自留在機場，夾車安排不太方便。我們當時是幾個家長自己組合的，一般都是坐同一航班，CX256 / CX257.
6）雜費方面，主要是EAL 與 私人樂器教授，其他的如文具之類數目很少的。

我感到你像擔心孩子學習上會遇到困難，這點你可放心，King’s 的老師有他們的辦法。JKS Y7入學考試三卷1）數學、2）reasoning; 3) English (對我們來說超深，reading 部分是Eng Lit, 相等于本港大學英文系一年級的內容）. 當時registrar 跟我説能考上的 Maths 與 reasoning 一般要A或A*，而英語非母語的只需達標。他們選year 7 學生是 Year 9 的預選，Skype interviewers 當中有 Senior King’s 的 admission officer. 當年兒子 interview 時3位 interviewers 當中 2位是 senior King’s 的。因此，year 7 入學而感到 Senior King’s demanding 的機率不太高。

6th form 選校近乎選 university destinations.
King’s Canterbury 的Oxbridge 入學率每年約在15-20% 範圍。 要更上一層樓的boarding schools, 則要target 25% 或以上的，namely Eton, Westminster, Winchester, Tonbridge, Wycombe Abbey (Cardiff not our cup of tea).

兒子非常喜歡King’s。當時曾建議試 Tonbridge Year 9, 但被拒絕了。相信6th form 也不容易改變，他説” I can do equally well in King’s“.

我仔是在英國boarding house 做Skype interview, 我仔告訴我只有Mr Outram 跟他傾，而且Mr Outram 個email 寫著這個只是informal interview。 Anyway, 很感謝你的詳盡資料，這對於我來說很有用。Thank you so much!

請你不要介意，我又有個問題，我現在用緊的Guardian 告訴我，她只有一個host family 在Canterbury, 所以並沒有選擇。請問你仔仔是用那個Guardian？exeat and half term break 是否住在Canterbury 的host family? 可否分享他住過的host family 的生活？有關收費又如何呢？最後可否pm 你仔的Guardian 給我呢？感激不盡。

請問你哋有冇考慮過Brighton College?我大囡嗰陣冇同學去BC（去Westminister就有）亦冇家長或agent提過BC。舊年年中開始就週圍都講BC，好奇怪。

從Agent 口中得知 BC 是一所成績很好的學校，亦非常受香港家長歡迎。
然而，我們希望兒子接受傳統英式全人教育及享受群體生活，所以在選校時較著眼學校的傳統文化及歷史背景及偏向宿生比例高的學校（70%+）。因此，沒有考慮BC。

BC 的 entrance requirement 是非常 academically selective, 它的整體成績優越也是可以預期。

By the way, 你囡囡會選那所學校？

PS 你提到BK很少提到King’s Canterbury，這一方面可能是學校每年收香港學生的人數不多，另一方面可能是King’s 的家長有不少是不經Agent 報考的。與我兒子同級的香港學生當中，我知道有二位同學與我們一樣是直接報考的，另外有一位男生的爸爸是Old boy.
