The equation of respiration : Food + oxygen →carbon dioxide + water + energy
The equation of burning : Fuel + oxygen→carbon dioxide + water +energy (heat and light)
Why is it that the teacher said both equations with energy could not be accepted as the correct answers?

如果當佢係一條Chemistry equation,就唔應該有 energy。

When we regard it as equation, we must balance both sides; either mass balance in engineering or mole balance in chemistry. The balance includes not only the numerical figures, but the unit also. Food, oxygen, CO2 and water can be expressed by weight, but not for energy (Theory of relativity is not applied here). Thus, your equation is invalid.

In addition, consider conservation of energy law. Energy will just change forms, not being created. What is the energy applied at the left side and what is energy output? At the left side of the equation should be stored energy plus energy applied as input, the right side of the equation , there is energy output in other form.
During nuclear reaction, mass releases massive amount of energy, e=mc^2, applied, mass and energy are the same thing.

This may be a better way to describe
Equation of respiration
Food+oxygen (stored energy) > Carbon dioxide+water (released energy as ATP)

Equation of burning
Fuel + oxygen (stored energy) > carbon dioxide+water (released energy as heat and light)
