請問play visit 同小朋友&家長傾計主要會圍繞啲咩問題?己經去左school Tour 雖然未收到invitation 但想早少少凖備,有少少緊張自己表現唔好影響小朋友⋯

For wks campus, 必問
1. What is you home language?
2. How do you support your child learning in eng medium?
3. Who is the main caretaker of ur child?

Teacher will ask you to interact with your child and they observe.

Be honest. For those non native English parents, pls think about if you should insist that you speak only English with your child at home. I have raised out this last year in EK and there was a debate.

This is true!  Good that you bring out this point to remind parents who are planning to send their kids to ESF or any IS with English as main media.

Maybe I can share my experience, we spoke only English before 2.5 years old, since then daddy spoke Cantonese and I spoke mostly English. And once 3.5 years we switched to almost all Cantonese at home. Now my daughter is native and fluent in both English and Cantonese at 4.5 years old. We introduced Cantonese once we felt her English was pretty secure at first, then we thought she could learn enough from school we just spoke Cantonese at home, that facilitates home teaching of Chinese too. Her best friend at same age who mainly speaks English at home shows sign of refusing to speak Chinese now. Studies have shown it Is possible to achieve native levels in both languages if introduced early. So may as we’ll grasp the opportunity!

I think it really depends on the kid, my experience tell me that kids do have a preferred language. We are a local family that speaks Cantonese at home. Unfortunately, my son's main carer (my parents-in-law) are Indonesian-Chinese who speak poor Cantonese. They use Cantonese to communicate but watch Putonghua TV at home. My son starts watching youtube at 1.5 years old and is really indulged in it. Since his carer knows a little English, they start teaching him in English (the numbers, colours, etc). My son changed to IS at 3 years old and he's pretty fluent in English now. He prefers English right at the beginning, and his Cantonese is always poor (difficult to express himself and with poor pronounciation too), although Cantonese is the main language of communication in my family (we have no maid at home). My friends' kids tend to prefer Cantonese when they watch TV or communicate with others, even if they have a Filipino maid at home. ESF kinder provides a good English environment but help from parents is needed to help the child to adapt. I speak 80% English to my son now, but if there's somthing he doesn't understand I would repeat in Cantonese again. His English is still fluent. So no worries moms, be true to yourself, try your best but don't be stubborn.

My experience is boys are less likely to speak both languages and girls are easier to pick up. Many parents express the same when they have two kids one boy and one girl, usually the girl is more likely to speak Cantonese and English and the boy only speaks English . Also the attitude of the main carer is a determinant factor too and one need to start early. I think I am a bit lucky my daughter can still pick up canto at 2-3 years old. We have a bit of struggle initially but looking back it still worths it. My two cents is just try your best at early stage cuz the later the more difficult to pick up Cantonese.

I trend to believe language talent depends on individual kids, not depends on gender.  At first, I believe girls are more talkaive and able to manage bilingual better than boys, which many examples tell me so.  When my litte girl borned, she broke my believe.  My case is:

Elder son:
April baby. Before age of 3, he lived with grandparents, no Filipino maid, 100% cantonese & 0% English at home. He started K1 at IS kinder (non ESF) and moved back to live with us.  At that time, I have no intention to talk with him in English, we keep using Cantonese. His teacher said he was reluctant to speak in English. But then, he adapted English environment at school well from K2 and no more complain from school about his English since then. He is Y5 now, though he prefers to speak in English, he has no problem to understand and express himself in Cantonese (dare not to comment on his Chinese reading & writing ).

Younger daughter:
Dec baby.  Before age of 2, daddy 100% cantonese, mammy & brother 100% English, Filipino maid, ESF kinder.  At that time, she was able to understand what daddy said, but she replied in English (not surprise).  I struggled a lot whether I should keep on communicating with her in English.  Since she's a small b, she's always behind the pace of her classmates, and she trends to have better understanding in English (though relatively weak when compare with her classmates), and most of all, she needed to compete with other dragon bs for a Y1 place (no siblings priority in ESF), thus I keep on using English.  Now, she's Y1 at RCHK, I need to put 200% effort to help her Chinese in order to keep her staying in pathway 2. T T

Conclusion: I agreed someone above said: "think about if you should insist that you speak only English with your child at home".  To give up Chinese is easy, to pick up Chinese again is "sometimes" painful (it really depends on the kid).

I just share my case, no intension of offence.

Thanks soooo much for this sharing - very helpful indeed!! Also thanks 964000 and Mandy for their wonderful sharing as well! Just spot on - am at the stage where am struggling whether to change bto speaking Cantonese to my little boy. He will be 2 years old next month and so far my husband speaks in Cantonese to him while I speak in English and we have a Filipino helper but His primary care taker is grandpa who speaks Cantonese. He is a late bloomer and hasn't talked yet except pa pa , mama , bi bi , ye ye, - which I guess is Cantonese. So speech somehow delayed .... not sure if I should change back to speaking cantonese first so that he started talking faster. In terms of comprehension , he is able to understand both English and Cantonese well....
