perhaps its just me being ignorant - your friend's kid has to do homework till m ... Here is my ownexperience on SIS.
SIS isfound combining all advantages from local school and international school fromparent point of view. First of all, kids are happy with certain level of freedom,being creative and high interaction with teachers & school friends during& after the class. They have a lot of activities during & after school.They are given a lot of chance of playing & learn in a lively way fromdifferent angle. On the other hand,school executes rule straightly concerning pupils’ safety and morality. Teacherkeep watching students behavior closely and allow a lot of communications withkids guiding them to admit and how to improve.Kids love to talk with their teacher during & after class.
In terms of academic,SIS encourage reading constantly and you will find all kids carry a book andread when they are waiting or queuing up in school for assembly or otherfunction. There is exam from P2 and test throughout the year. They make the100% well evenly spread among tests, projects, presentation ,HW and exam, whichI don’t see high pressure on kids during exam. Teacher treat every test in a serious mannerand kids understand they need to do their best. But when kids got low marks, theywill never been blamed by teachers but encouragement. Teachers patientlyexplain to them and write remarks on their every single mistake on homework,also follow their correction in details until the kids can get a correct answerespecially in Math . Heard a few of them do Homework until mid night, but itsvery rare and the case I know is the kid start doing the homework after parentback home after 10pm. HW are given at a very reasonable volume. P1 kids do not have HW every day but canusually finish in 20 min. P2 kid has HW everyday but can usually finish within 30-40min.
In terms of language, kids are well get used to do presentation withoutscript . Since in SIS preparatory, kids do presentation by weekly and teachersasked parent do not prepare written scriptfor kids and do not ask them to memorize the script. Beforefinish the 2 year preparatory, kids can be able to come out and talk naturallyin any topic given. Same as their written also in good ability. Kids speaks English and PTH in the schooleven they know each other can talk Cantonese , they are not forced to do so butEnglish become their first language in school naturally. As a parent, sometimesI ask myself what do I want further from a school ?
Before summer, a teacher of “ student development” retired, she was theone to talk to student who has behavior mistake and provide assistance, let the kidscorrect and move on. Students cried when her retirement was announced. Then youcan imagine how students was well guided on their fault and correction from their heart bottom. I remember when I was a teen in local school,we hated those “ disciplinary” teacher as they scold one way when we made mistakein school. Just a fact sharing here, I am not trying to encourage parents toapply SIS for their kids , while it’s difficult to get in too. In short I woulddescribe it “ Work hard & play hard”as the school life. |
