Re: Help 聖嘉勒小學一問
Dear byi
Your question is one the most favourable questions the parents of St Clare's students like to ask me. To stay or not to stay, that's the question.
If you ask someone else, you are likely to be given some general and not-too-useful answers like "there will be risk involved." I hate to give such answers. To me, the question we should ask should be "what is the level of risk?" A good gambler has to calculate the odds against him before he put down his bet.
I am neither an education expert nor a mathematician but it doesn't take either to do the following simple calculation from published data:
According to EMB's statistics for 2004/2005, we have 3,102 students in Central & Western net (Net HK1) and there are 1,034 seats from the English schools in this net. Band 1 students account for 1/3 of the 3,102 students, i.e. the magic number of 1,034 again.
This is still too general. Let's drill down into details for a more meaningful guess. We are talking about a girl here. To make it safe, let's assume band 1 girls account for 50% of the total band 1 students. Then we have around 520 band 1 girls in this district. Then comes a little secret. Sacred Heart's secondary section belongs to southern district while the primary section belongs to central & western district. That means there are over 100 band 1 girls from central western district going to study in southern district and thus not competing with the other band 1 girls for the English school places in central & western district. I suspect this is one of the ingenious little designs some smart civil servants come up to give some subtle preferential treatment to students in central and western district. Then we have around 420 band 1 girls left in the net.
We have 3 decent girls school in this net: Ying Wah (with no feeder school), St Stephen’s Girls and St Clare's. My estimate is that out of the latter two schools, around 120 band 1 girls will stay with their schools, then we can take out another 120 girls from the competing pool. Then we have around 300 band 1 girls competing for the remaining English school places. If you add up all the places (open and discretionary) available in this net (it doesn't take long since we are talking only a small number of schools here), there are more than 300 places
In other words, despite the existence of feeder schools where band 2 girls are guaranteed an English school seat, you can see all band 1 girls in this net are guaranteed an English school seat as well.
Ying Wah takes in around 150 band 1 girls from this net. You can see the odds for your daughter. As for the tactics to maximize your girl's chance, this is a one-million-dollar question I am more than happy to explore with you over a Sunday brunch you buy me and my family (ha ha)
