My son finished ESF k1 and k2, then goes KJS according to catchment zone

My girl is now studying at year 1 kjs. She loves to go to school everyday. She is not happy when it is holiday but there are lot of school holidays. She has chinese class only 3 times a week but she is able to tell me what she has learnt and sometimes sings the mandarin song. The chinese words that they are learning are very simple, like 1-10. There are lots of art work during the class. She always bring back her art work home. At this stage,  the only homework she need to do is "home reader". Everyday, school will give her a book at her level to home for reading. Parents need to help her  to read until she can read it by her herself fluently before exchanging another one.

No. Just happens there are more Indians living in that catchment area.

It is base on the kid's reading level, from 1 to 30

Yes, every child will have a initial assessment on their literacy in the beginning of the year. Some of them may be smarter and some of them may not be able to read by themselves, like my girl. She will start from level one, day by day until she can be read by herself one day.

just curious, are those Indians in KJS ESF kindy students before? seems there arent many Indians in Tsing Yi or Wu Kai Sha?

Well, I don't know Wu Kai Sha, but just few from Tsing Yi. (I'm taking about 5 years ago)

I think it's more to do with catchment and sibling priority.
Previously priority was based on cat 1 cat 2  this gives an obvious advantage to Indians when most of them can't speak Cantonese. Now although this priority system is replaced most of them still get priority based on siblings.

i did not see that many Indian parents' face at the parent briefing this year.  the percentage various.

My child in Year 1 told me than she only has 5 Indian in her class.  she said Hong Kong children are the majority.
I believe she must have mis-counted somehow, but it should not be too far off.

According to a friend who has 2 children in KJS now (one Year 3 one Year 5), it  varies from class to class. The majority of students are still Chinese. That is over 50% are Chinese. Then may be 40% Indians. Then 10% other ethnic. I guess the class that have 25 indians is just an exception.
In any case, is that a concern to parents? If it is, then may be ESF or international schools in general is not for you.

My kid is in year 3, it is still difficult for him to identify Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Korean etc in his class. It is mainly because they all speak in English. He even don't know who can speak Cantonese in his class. Parents seems concerning about the allocation of the ethnicity in school, but for kids, they don't care about it.

That is true.  They play with everyone.  We don't normally talk about ethnic differences.  However, the school just had a Diwali assembly, so my child talked about the Indians in her class.
