Is there any disadvantage to postponing the use of pedal?  
My original plan is to wait 2-3 years till my girl is tall enough and focus on her tone, touch, hand posture, etc in the mean time.  It seems to me there is so much foundation work to do as is, without the pedal.  But the "rush" to the pedal nowadays makes me rethink my strategy.
(My girl is now playing gr.3 pieces, although I have no plans to sign her up for any exams.)

I think your strategy is very professional and well thought.

I have taken over a lot of students who had started using pedal before they developed proper finger techniques, which led to the problem of not being able to play legato without pedal or doing phrasing smoothly.

It requires great coordinations when using pedal and a lot of technical flaws would be hidden when the pedal is overly used.

In my opinion, one should learn to play a piece legato with their fingers as much as they can and with correct phrasing, before starting to practice with pedal.

老師話彈完這首校際歌，暫時盡量不會教踏pedal，直至他夠高為止，我估都要兩年後的事

孩子細時是站著而pad pad貼住琴櫈...
成日怕張櫈移後跌親丶結果又沒事。近年曾見家長帶埋加高pedal去參加某些比賽.....

老師另一學生，未跟她之前，由四歲開始就帶住加高四處參加比賽，老師說我仔既然不常參加比賽，無需急於練踏pedal，也不需買一個在家練習，練好雙手先啦

請問在一般小朋友必定會彈的曲目當中, 邊首是最早學又必定要用pedal呢?  
如果等到彈Chopin Prelude 先學pedal會否太遲?  請賜教.

純屬個人意見及經驗，我一向都沒有特別定下哪些曲目是學生必定要學的，我多數按學生的興趣，能力和需要，並按着學生需要學習的技巧為他們編寫或選擇合適的曲目。

從過往經驗，我認為彈奏有人唱的歌曲，是其中一個對練習用pedal 的不錯的選擇，因為這些歌曲要求分句清晰。

Chopin 的曲目當然是用來練pedal 的好選擇，不過其實在用pedal 所需學習的技巧有分很多種，不只要單單踩下去便完事，還要明白踩多深，甚麼時候踩，甚麼時候放，並與手的配合，所以亦會有不同的要求。

其實如果你的小朋友的手指技巧已成熟到一定程度，又夠高踩pdeal，隨時可以開始學習用pedal，不需要特定說等到學甚麼歌曲才學用，亦沒有分早與遲。早點學不會代表特別叻，遲些學亦不會代表不好。

我的教學宗旨是 (對初學者，或仍未掌握到pedal 技巧的學習者)，pedal主要是輔助功能，若果手不能做到連(legato)的效果，才加上pedal (當然亦有例外的情況)。若果手可能做到，就盡量少用pedal，當然不是說不能用，只是有時候初學者會用太多pedal，手所彈奏的會變得不清析。不論是任何級數的學生，剛開始學用pedal 的時候，都應該先學習用手做到連的效果，然後加入pedal，讓連的效果可以做到更佳。

以上純屬個人意見，可能別的老師會有不同見解。
