There is not much difference between the overall DSE results and university admission rate between WYK and SFXC in the past few years. Having said that, WYK has more elite students while SFXC is more average and less extreme. In terms of DSE subjects, WYK's English is much better than SFXC while SFXC performs better in Maths.
Since most of the boys in YTM will put WYK as their first choice, some Band 2 students have been admitted to SFXC through Central Allocation stages for the past few years. Therefore, you should be guaranteed a place at SFXC if you are really a Band 1 student and have put SFXC in Part B of the Central Allocation.
This strategy (WYK 1 and SFXC 2) is risky if your boy is a borderline case. Most of the schools in YTM are either Band 1 or Band 3 and there are very few Band 2 schools. If you are a Band 2 student and adopt this strategy, you have a great risk to be allocated a Band 3 schools if you can't get a place in SFXC.
Therefore, the teacher's advice does make sense.
