Most kids changes school in Grade 7 so applying for Grade 5 instead is a good move. Congrats for getting in! I agree with Poonseelai, that it is a difference of two years of tuition between the existing school & CDNIS.

You must take into consideration your boy's character as well. CDNIS is presentation heavy, so out-going kids with strong public speaking skills has the advantage (plus existing CDNIS kids are used to this from when they are very young). If the child is quiet and shy then even if his prep work is good but presentation is weak he still may not obtain high grades.

At this age we shouldn't worry about being the top of the class yet anyhow; as long as he can keep up and enjoy school then boys do excel in upper secondary. I believe CDNIS may have seen his potential, plus it's a matter of the availability of a vacant spot at this age. Whatever your decision may be, I'm happy for you!

我3月考試時 職員話grade7會比grade6開多一班,當時還有几個位,所以我觉得上到小學,想轉校不是太難,英基除外

Honest speaking, there is only a very very long queue for ESF schools. Others are much much easier. ESF provide quality education at a reasonable tuition fee. Besides,  there secondary schools are famous especially the King George V School Spacious campus and  excellent support in academic. Besides, their IB exam result is bravo. KGV is our dream school.

點評

jolalee  FYI, CDNIS & ESF's IB results are about the same. http://hongkong.geoschools.com/articles/academics/1014-hk-ib-results-2013
KGV didn't report for 2024, but in 2012 their average score was 35.4  發表於 14-6-6 08:40

As long as learning Chinese in school is not a big concern, ESF are great. Do take note though that even if you plan to teach the child Chinese outside of school, the general attitude towards Chinese amongst peers within ESF is a bit negative. Of course there are lots of success stories too, but it takes extra efforts and wise parenting to do so.

Personally my son has the final year of interview priority as an ESF kindergarten student, but when he has the offer for a Reception (K2) spot for an IS with decent enough Chinese, we took it without a doubt. First of all even with interview priority and native English speaking skills the chance of getting in an ESF primary is still not guaranteed, secondly given my own Chinese is poor I don't want to risk my son not liking Chinese himself. Of course, the parent's attitude and teaching are important too.

I heard from my friend that there is a special list. If you reject their offer, then you will be put on that list and you have a very small chance to get in in the future.

Thank you for letting us know! How about changing school? From an ESF kindergarten or PIS, going to another IS, but moving back to ESF at a later time? Is that possible? I am sure some expat parents may need to travel from city to city every several years and may need to do that.

Returning student should be easier, but I am not sure. But we do have many students going somewhere and then return. But usually they do present a report card from another country.

I called the school in regards to any priority in the future if our family leave HK and return in a few years, given my son attended ESF K1 (final year to obtain priority). However, the answer I received was a 'no'. As long as he doesn't get thrown into a black list then I am happy with it (as a possible switch when he grows older; we never know about what life will throw at us).
