Dear Working Hard & Planning Hard Fellow HK Parents,

A Top 1% UK school is to have its First Open Day on (Sat) 26 April and then more in July/September,

https://www.colytongrammar.devon.sch.uk/diary/opendays.htm

If you've a British/European Passport, you can apply for your child as stated in the following link,

https://www.colytongrammar.devon.sch.uk/admissions/arrangements.htm

(And your child is to take the 11+ in October)

I applied for my elder boy when we're in OZ and I knew a few HK parents did the same.

The school is a State School (i.e. NO fee) and was ranked 1st in GCSE and 10th in A Level (about 5,500 State & Independent secondary schools in England & Wales)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-25849548

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-25849550

For more information about 11+ in Devon, please visit the following link,

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/11plus/viewforum.php?f=13&sid=adb7e587cc0ca0cfac9f5fcdcaf67d40

If my elder boy spent most of his first 10 years in playing lego, at beaches & in playgrounds, and did around 30 minutes extra work at home a day in NZ/OZ, if he could make it, so could your more hard working and more able child.

Good Luck.

Best wishes

Unfortunately, it's not a state boarding school.  Not suitable for HK's parents/students to apply

State school without boardng is fine if the school can provide an open and quality education to our children.

Dear Terenace, would you mind to share your road to CGS? and any advise if my son's age is 14 (F.2) now, many thanks!

Perhaps because I lived in several countries before, had closed contact with many young children in my last career as a police inspector and as a volunteer, and had worked closely with School Governors/Directors, Principals/Headmasters/Headteachers , I therefore have a very different view from yours:

It is FORTUNATE that the CGS does not provide boarding.

Given that students at the CGS take GCSE a year earlier (i.e. at Yr 10) than most schools and it has an unique 3-year A level structure, it does NOT accept any 6-formers from other schools as they will not 'fit in'.

As such, the only main intake is at Yr 7, meaning students will be at around 11 years old when admitted. At this age, I personally think, the family should be working as a team and stay together for an All Round Development, rather than a child being 'abandoned'  alone in a completely new country with a new culture, in a new school with new people - a child may make some very bad choices due to peer group pressure and not having proper and impartial advice from the family.

In fact, I saw the disastrous consequences happened in New Zealand, where many South Koreans 'dumbed' their young children at the private boarding schools, and many these children had got into big troubles. The NZ government subsequently had to act, making it a Legal Requirement that any overseas student under the age of 11/12? studying in NZ MUST have a parent/closed relative staying with them.

It is a Fact in Life that every parent has to make a decision : Money or Family.

The choice is yours.

Dear Berry,

Any child misses the main intake at Yr 7 (i.e. aged under 12 when admitted) can take the 12+, 13+ test as stated in the last paragraph under the heading, 'Is it possible to enter the school from age 12 onwards?' in the CGS's admission policy,

https://www.colytongrammar.devon.sch.uk/admissions/faqs.htm

The CGS, however, does NOT take external students for its A Level as stated in the last paragraph under the heading 'Admission to Year 11' in its admission policy,

https://www.colytongrammar.devon.sch.uk/admissions/arrangements.htm

You may wish to know the latest GCSE and A Level result for individual subject,
https://www.colytongrammar.devon.sch.uk/results/index.htm

You may also wish to know where the last year students go after finishing their A Levels,
https://www.colytongrammar.devon.sch.uk/results/destinations.htm

(Oxford University is the No. 1 destination and Cambridge being the No.3. Medicine is the No.1 degree)

I applied while us in OZ through Email. The school sent the test papers to the OZ school where my elder boy attending. My elder boy took the test under the supervision of an OZ teacher in a classroom. I then posted back the papers to UK. They later send me Email notification, followed up by a letter, congratulating me that my elder boy was amongst the 120 applicants being accepted.

Hope the above help.

Good luck to your child.

Best wishes

Thank you for your sharing.  I just read the admission requirement for Year 11 which requires GCSE results.  My kid will only be taking most of the GCSE / IGCSE exams in Year 11.  So there is no chance.

This is because students taking the GCSE a year early at Yr 10, and its 6-from starts from Yr 11, that is why it asks for GCSE results.

Perhaps, you may wish to consider the 6-form at the http://www.crgs.co.uk/, which has Boarding.

My UK Uni old friend (also from HK) relocated to UK in 2008 and his son was admitted to CRGS's 6-form last Sept. It has the Highest % of STATE school students getting into Oxbridge.  (about 1 in 4)

We ruled it out back in 2009 for our elder boy was because we preferred him attending a Co-Edu school - CRGS is a boys' school for Yr 7-Yr11.

CRGS made my friend's son an offer : 6A* in GCSE. http://www.crgs.co.uk/the-school/admissions
(He got A* in all his 11 subjects)

Good luck to your child.

Thanks for your reply.  Mine is a girl.  Any recommendations?

Colchester Royal Grammar School accepts girls in its 6-form as stated in the Headteacher's Welcome,

http://www.crgs.co.uk/the-school/heads-welcome

(Line 2, Paragraph 3, 'An 11-18 boys’ school with girls in the Sixth Form')

And if you look at 'Home', http://www.crgs.co.uk/,  it also states
'Outstanding Ofsted Inspection Report for Boarding', and one of the flashing images showing it has '40 Oxbridge Offers'.

Good Luck to your girl!
(6A* in GCSE and get herself a place)

Best wishes

I'm sure your girl will be fine with a Caring & Planning Ahead parent like you.

It seems like only yesterday that our child/ren were still babies!

All the best to you and your girl.
(Our family may bump into yours somehow, somewhere, sometime during our coming visit to HK in July/Aug)
