Caitlin Fischer (Y13) is this year’s only recipient of the prestigious Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship for Overseas Studies 2014/15.

The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarships aim at financing outstanding Hong Kong students for overseas undergraduate studies.  They are expected to contribute significantly to the development of Hong Kong after graduation. To qualify for the scholarship students must have received at least five years of continuous full-time education in Hong Kong, be proficient in English and Chinese and fulfil all admission requirements and be offered a place at the institution of their choices. Caitlin, who joined GSIS in 2002, intends to study Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States.

Competition for the overseas fellowships and scholarships for 2014/15 was extremely keen and seven outstanding students, from among 208 applicants, were presented with the fellowships and scholarships at the 27th Awards Presentation Ceremony of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund (SEYMF) at Hong Kong City Hall on 23 March.

Lady Youde, who officiated at the ceremony, said, “For 27 years, the Fund has spared no effort in supporting our most gifted students to obtain the highest quality education and also in encouraging those determined to make the very best of their talents.” And went on to say, “It has always been rewarding to see how the Fund has made it possible for our young people to take on new challenges and fulfil their ambitions.”

This year the Fund also spent $833,000 on the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Prizes for senior secondary school students from around 420 schools throughout the territory. Each school nominates one student from Year 13 and one from Year 11.Caitlin was also awarded the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Prize, together with Justin Wei (Y11)

Congratulations to Caitlin and Justin on their achievements!

Congratulations to Cautlin. Who are the other 6 students getting the scholarship. What about the Rhodes scholars?

The more bizzare a thing is, the less mysterious it proves to be.

I heard that 2 boys from GSIS received Prince Philip Schlorship this year and will study at Cambridge in coming Oct.

This demonstrates that bright students aim high, not bound by three local uni on so called 神科。

How to attract them to study in HK university?

Yes, good IS students are high flyers and usually choose subjects of their interest, not only the popular subjects in local universities, while most local school students are bound to choose those subjects because of seemingly future earning power.
