回覆:vsa vs sis?

Would vsa be a less stressful environment for the kids? A more open learning environment? It will also have traditional Chinese as well..

I think sis has a strong academic background but i hear that it can get a bit stressful with workload etc as they progress through their primary school years?

Any comments?

Depends on what you are looking for.  SIS is very strong academically.  I have a friend whose 2 kids went there.  One is still there in secondary.  The younger one, after kindy and 2 years in primary, couldn't take it anymore and transferred to another IS.  The parents' comments - SIS is very, very structured.  If your child is more creative, SIS may not be the right choice as not much deviation is allowed.  Their older child fits well, so he is staying.  Their younger one is now much happier at the new school.

I was curious as well and asked my friend about after school sports because it seems SIS places a strong emphasis on after school activities as well (I think it is mandatory for children to at least attend one activity beginning from Year 3?)  The mom's feeling is that, it is just gimmick.  At the end of the day, she believes the school only cares about academics.

Ultimately, a good school is what fits a child's needs, imho.

As for SIS current academic level, I have no idea.  But I can say this - local schools' level is at least  1 year ahead of average schools in the U.S. in math.  Good local schools can also be 1 year ahead of the US in terms of English (as a subject).  So according to HIHinsurance, if SIS is ahead of local schools by  1/2 year to 1, then SIS must be 1.5 to 2 years ahead of US?

Also, from what I understand, SIS' academics is ahead of CIS as well.  So my question is, does strong academics make a better school?  I don't have a child attending any of the schools discussed in this thread.  However, I would pick VSA for mine if I were asked to choose.  (and I won't even pick VSA to start with.  I like the school in general, but I don't like their homework load.)

Thanks for all the feedback. I guess my concern is Ard the 'structure' of sis which may limit creativity for my kids. Although I don't know everything abt VSA but given the IB structure I feel that may allow a more open-minded learning environment and promote creativity...

NVM.... from my observation .... SIS's management and teachers have the enthusiasm, software and hardware to deliver top quality education to the kids, and develop their bilingual capabilities to the native level.  Yes, their curriculum is intellectually demanding but we shall understand that good foundation is never built on a vacuum.... it is more apparent as far as language foundation is concerned... drilling is a must .... the difference is whether u do it in a more interesting or boring way. That SIS kids love to go to school so much is a testimony of the fact demanding school work could be done in a happier, more interesting way.

Just a quick add-on on your 2nd paragraph.  It is mandatory for students to take part in at least one ECA in local schools back in Singapore.  I guess SIS might be following this "tradition" since they are adopting parts and parcel of the Singapore local education system.  The school always believes that kids should have other leisure apart from academic stuffs.  Whether or not the school only cares about academics, I am not in a position to comment, but I certainly do not think it is a gimmick or anything like this.

If you want creativity development, SIS probably is not a good choice. If you want academics, SIS will fit you well.
I have seen some kids including my child 's few classmates and my friends' children transferred to ESF and other IS after studied in SIS some period of time. Their parents said their kids had too much stress mostly from the examinations in primary.

If your child is good at academics, he or she will fit in well.  One mom told me she feels stressful to see her girl struggling, she wants to transfer out but no space available in other IS.

Yes I don't really want to be a stressful mom and if I am it just destroys the relationship w my kids... Thats why its better to be in a less stressful school...
