My son is studying in SJC K1.

He can speak bilingual easily, with English more fluent than Cantonese. Due to the beginning of phonic lessons in this year, he tries to pronoun words which he does not know when reading books. Though  not always correct, his guessing is close enough to impress me.

Thank for your sharing. Bcoz I speak Cantonese with my daughter only, I hope my daughter could speak English fluent as same as international school student when she will start to study this school next year. One more question, does the school encourage student reading books? Booz my daughter is  less interested in reading.

SJC put high effort on learning and writing but asking students to read books may not be their major focus. During PN( in another school) my son have library books brought back every weekend from school, and parents are supposed to read the books with their kids together and write simple book reports. If this is the way a school to encourage book reading, then SJC may not have done so.

Personally I do not have problem with either SJC or previous PN method of teaching. School schedules are always very tight that if one activity is done another one would be sacrificed. On the other hand I used to read story books with my boy every night before sleeping.This has given him a basic interest in reading.

Thanks for sharing! Any homework assigned to your son(K1 student) and what kinds of homeworks have if any? Also, apart from English, is there any Putonghua learned at school?

Yes, there is homework. Most of the homework is about coloring and writing.

There is one session of Mandarin everyday. Very short though ( about 10 mins per day).
