My son will be promoted to SFA P2 in the coming Sep. I would like to share my own experience with the parents considering this school.
Homework - the amount is very reasonable and usually my son can finish all his homework before he takes his dinner at 7:00 p.m. Except for Chinese, he can do all the homework by himself. It means that the textbook contents are well taught by the teachers during the class. Chinese is very difficult to most of P1 students and my son needs some assistance from us especially the reading comprehension exercises.
Teaching pace - It is very fast. On top of the 3 examinations and 3 assessments in each school, there are dictations or maths quiz in almost every week. Hence, we need to spend a few hours during weekend to do the revision with my son in order to keep up with the curriculum.
Test / Examination - The school will only distribute the test papers but not the examination paper. My son always score higher marks in the examination, so I suspect the test papers are a little bit more difficult (may be only in P1). Questions in the test papers are at the same level of the homework and worksheets given by the teachers during the class. Of course, there are some difficult questions to differentiate the students but in general it is not 教得淺但考得深.
Curriculum and teaching quality - Textbook contents are well covered by the teachers. For English, there are grammar handouts prepared by the teacher and plenty of grammar drilling worksheets. English textbook is from Singapore and one level higher, so the vocabularies are quite difficult. Good to have poem and literature in the curriculum. Phonics are taught by NET but just one class every week. Maths is taught and examined in Chinese but there are supplementary English Maths exercises and quiz (score not counted in ranking). Chinese is taught in PTH and I believe the level is same as most primary schools. Both Maths and Chinese have a lots of worksheets from school for practices. General studies are taught in English. Hence, students good in English will have some advantage.
In all, I am very happy with SFA and it provides a very solid academic training to my son. Having said that, the curriculum of SFA is quite difficult and the teaching pace is very fast. Parent support, at least in lower class, is a must.
