Actually the two are radically different.

Simplified Chinese is just what its name suggests, a set of commonly used Chinese characters with the number of strokes reduced, the end result is still a set of pictographic characters, just simpler.

Korean or "Hangul" is a set of alphabets, and Korean words are direct representations of the spoken sounds. If one must draw a parallel, Hangul is like 注音符號.

點評

annie40  Thank you for let me know.  My Korean friends said 'Hangul' was much easier to master.  However, I still wonder why they knew so many Chinese characters as well.  發表於 13-8-26 15:14

Hangul is easier to master because it is just a set of alphabets, if you can speak Korean, it is relatively easy to learn to write Hangul because you are just writing down the sounds.

For the older generation of Koreans, many of them did make extra efforts to learn Chinese characters, but that has been on the decline for decades. Today if a Korean knows enough Chinese characters to read 金庸, he/she is likely to be over 60.
