Thanks for the explanation and now I understand better. However, it does not change the fact that IB is not recognized in the US and most people have to do SAT.

IB is duly recognized by US colleges. They give senior standing to IB diploma holders. However for college admission, most competitive US colleges would need SAT i (or ACT) plus 2 to 3 SAT II subject test scores no matter you have IB diploma or not. However if you are an IB candidate, the college admission officers would consider you from a further angle.

I meant IB is not recognized as an entrance qualification for US universities.  For these Us, IB is the same as DSE as far as entrance qualification goes.

For the more competitive universities, SAT tests are requirements for both local and international student. So it doesn't not mean IB is not recognized, they need a standardized basis to look at the kids - both local and international students.

As other mommies and daddies pointed out, SAT alongside school academic results and IB exams are all part of the things they consider during application.

For a lot of the competitive schools, school activities, leadership and interviews play a very important part in the decision making process.

I myself graduated from an Ivy League school and worked at the admission office when I was at school and is still helping the school interviewing the kids in HK. So I would like to say IB is recognized, just like HKCEE was recognized during our days too.

How would you compare the AP program with the IB program from an US college admission officer's perspective?

From what the admission office I work with, they look at the child holistically. Hard to say which one is most important. But I think they put marginal emphasis on the background of the school (whether that school has accepted any of the students from the high school and how these students perform at college), school report, school reference letter, and also the leadership skills are as the most important. SAT tests, AP, IB and GSCE are all supplementary. They will roughly look at the SAT scores, but they won't expect overseas student to have similar levels of SAT scores as locals.  I think they tend to accept students from the same batch of schools every year.... So the school's track record with the university and how the student is holistically is most important.  

I have interviewed a lot of kids who got super good IB or HKCEE or GSCE or SATs scores and were not accepted....

Know I am not really answering this very well. But the colleges do look at the students on a holistic basis, rather than just looking at the kids on a result of one particular element - be it SAT or IB or GSCE etc

Sorry I meant they put marginally MORE emphasis on the background of the secondary school. Eg, LPC, some of the ESF and elite IS and LS tend to have high placement to these Ivy League as they have a long track record....

"Holistic" is a more subjective approach from my view. As an experienced admission officer, how can you balance out the subjectivity?

Holistic approach for different programs may have different attributes, am I correct?
