我小朋友學緊piano, clarinat, badminton, fencing, tennis and ice skating. Are these too much for my kids? How many extracurricular activities  (ECA) your kids get? Let's share. Are these helpful, esp musical instruments, in applying university later?

When I went to university in UK, no one ever cared if I could play any musical instruments. In my working life, I have seen perhaps a few hundred CVs over the years, and I don't remember seeing a single one mentioning the ability to play musical instruments.

Of course, if I had studied music and my work is related to music it would be a different story, but I don't {:1_1:}

How old is your kid?
Why don't focus on 1-2 activities?

I was just on this topic with another friend. Seriously, these are hobbies. Kids should enjoy or feel passionate about their hobbies, not think of the benefit it gives on a resume on Uni entrance. Let them enjoy life as it is!

They build interest and develop persistence, perseverance and perhaps a few friendships with kindred spirits who's also passionate with what they do. These are much more precious then a degree. Plus, if you push it, they'd might hate it. Must be from the heart - their heart.

You mean primary admission or university admission? One sports + one musical instrument?

Do you heard about CAS.?

When I applied to US university years ago, I don't think the school really cared if I had grade 8 piano. It was nice for the school to know that you have other interest aside from studying, but it wasn't particularly impressive and it wouldn't have made a difference to the school if my interest was gardening instead (as long as I have proof to show that I wasn't 吹水 regarding gardening). Why don't you let your kid choose which ECA s/he want to continue and pursue?

That's the core of IB, it's the short form of Creativity, Action and Services.  You can check at IBO official website to understand the rationale and what is included.
University seriously consider the CAS of IB as competitive advantage of IB students.

Putting the kid into so many ECA will deprive his time of exploring the stuffs from books, the surroundings or the nature, and his creativity to entertain himself. Kids need unstructured playing, not structured playing from ECAs.

moreover, as the kid gets older, you may find that he should spend more time in their studies and get higher level of skills in the ECA (e.g. tennis, needs more than just a lesson or an hour of training per week in order to be a good player!). So, ask your kid which ECA he likes more. make him focus on 1 or 2 ECA, instead of spending too much time on too many stuffs.

I think ECAs should be the kid's future hobby or interest, that he will continue after graduation, not simply a tool for getting into university.

如果要幫到手,起碼要達港隊水平,拿到地區性,甚至國際賽事獎項。

小朋友要達到果個水平,要好熱愛個運動,有天份和刻苦訓練,吾容易。
