Same to my kid.  He likes reading Chinese books very much (which is good).  I also want him to spend more time reading English books.  But he won't if you don't ask him.

我覺得中文真係難學過英文好多...我都有少少後悔仔仔細個時太著重英文...希望而家努力唔會太遲...

It depends on whether you are working for China / Taiwan markets or western markets.  In my company, even the foreigners are required to learn mandarin if they want to do well in the China / Taiwan markets

I have been reading both Eng and Chi books to my 10 month baby for many months. You keep reading for a few weeks and gradually baby will show interest in it once they find something familiar.

Every time I introduce a new book, he seems not so interested in it.
Now when he reads old books, he will laugh and show you that he knows certain page or animal, a very interesting and wonderful experience!

I have a very silly question to ask....  How do you read Chinese books to children?  The Chinese written language is very different to the spoken form(in Cantonese).  If I read as it is written on the book, my son was like 'What are you talking about, Mummy?'.  If I translate the text into spoken form then it doesn't really make sense as it's not really what's written on the book.
I wish my Mandarin is a bit better so I could read books in Mandarin. My son knows Mandarin as my husband speaks Mandarin to him, but unfortunately my husband can't read and write.... My sis in law (from my husband's side) reads all sorts of books to her children in Mandarin and my son loves it whenever we visit them.

請問小朋友幾大?我女k3之前我就係用口語化同佢講中文故事,到k3開始就跟書讀,仲要同佢一齊讀。當然好多詞語要解釋佢聽。 到上小學,你會發現佢造句會比較容易掌握。

Thx for your advice!  My son is nearly 3 so I'm glad to know that reading books in speech dialect at this age is OK.  I've been kinda avoiding Chinese books as I don't know how to deal with them!
