Too conservative.
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Always pick the subjects you are confident to get the highest grade.  Of course these subjects must be related to the programme you would choose in university.

If the kids can manage to study History, I suggest that they should consider taking History. My son was offered to study law by 2 top UK colleges several year ago. Both specify that it was a condition that he should have "5" on the AP World History. Many of his classmates were rejected by the same colleges because they did not take World History.

My daughter was admitted to MBBS of HKU this year. She also took World History (in addition to the science subjects). She stood out probably because she took history in her curriculum.

If you can handle "History" with good results, you need good reading, analytical and writing skills. You need to skill to articulate your view point clearly and succinctly. Such transferable skills are useful to any curriculum. That is why if the kids can handle history, it is a good option for them to take. It helps demonstrate their ability to the admission committee with the need to say so.

We discussed the same scope in another post that Economics and Geography share the same transferable skills.

to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

My D was determined to take medicine. She studied "History" in order to let her practice and grow the reading, analytical and writing skills.

My S did mention to me that he was very interested in History and would like to study History in college. Both parents raised no objection because it was quite easy for a History graduate to join an investment bank before the financial meltdown. Further if he had no interest in the financial section, it was only a first degree and he could choose a professional degree after graduation. In any event, we explained to him that "law" was quite similar to "history". If he liked to study history, he might like to study law. After doing some research, he decided to apply for the law program.

If the family could afford the kids to take a second degree or professional degree, I see no reason why we would not let the kids pursue their interests.

Agree. Economics and Geography are also good options to provide the process for the kids to learn the reading, analytical and writing skills. My feeling is that if you have a broad base of education, i.e.science subjects plus one or two humanity subjects, it is easier to attract the attention of the admission committee of whatever program you apply for (so long the grades are competitive).

My D's application is based on Non-Jupas. She did not take DSE so she did not have 5** or 5*.

At the interview, she was asked by the professors why she studied history because it was not connected with MBBS.

She explained to the admission committee that learning history gave her the opportunity to practice and grow the reading, analytical and writing skills which were essential when studying medicine. Further she had to discuss and debate frequently during lessons on the historical issues. She needed to articulate clearly her points to the fellow classmates and won their recognition of her view points. She told the professors that one of the essential attributes of the doctors was their ability to communicate effectively well with patients and fellow doctors. Further, good communication skills would enable her to become a good team-players which were also essential to doctors.

At the end of the interview, she was commended by the professors for her answers on History.
