This year both medical schools admit 10A* students (Non-jupas) to their 6-year program. It appears that 10A* students' academic performance would be in par of the DSE students because they receive 12 years education. There failure cases would be substantially less in the future.

Some of them with GCE AS/AL as back up, not straight GCSE 10A* only.
No one want any failure medical students, it's too costly and waste the golden opportunities for other capable kids. That's why I need my boy 100% sure he wants to take MBBS, don't waste other's chance.

HKU and CU admitted 10A* students who are in the lower 6th Form only. They do not have AL results (or at most one) because they have not yet in the upper 6th Form. However, you are correct that they may have AS results to back up or the offer is conditional upon certain marks in their AS results.

Your attitude is very correct. Unless your son is 100% sure that he wants to take up MBBS, he should not apply for. It is a matter of wasting the public fund and his time if he subsequently finds that MBBS is not suitable to him.

GCSE 同 hkcee

The percentage of A*/A for popular subjects is around 35% to 45%. Some may be as high as 50%. For less popular subjects, the percentage of A*/A is around 25% to 35%.

If you compare the percentage of Hong Kong AL (which is no longer held), the percentage of A is around 3%. The percentage of 5**/5*/5 for popular subjects of HKDSE is around 10%.

So whether it is a good result for the schools you mentioned should be compared with the percentage amongst its education system. We cannot say a student of 10A* is better than a student of 9B of the old HKCEE.

By the study of British Council, an A* should be equivalent to B of the old HKCEE and A is equivalent to C of the old HKCEE.

In those days, they don't need AS to back up.  They were admitted through EAS.  The one I know got addmitted to MBB got 11A* and her parents are doctors.  The other one with IB 38 also came from renowned medical family.  Its the interview and their background that counts.

Its true to say that IGCSE is easier to get an A than HKCEE.  That's why admission office  only  concern how many A* you have got and your overall performance.  It's not easy to get many A* in a row because  subjects like Business Studies, English, ICT are between 1 - 4 %
