I don't think so. IB will lead to non-Jupas and DSE will be Jupas...IB students usually target more at overseas universities... so all depends on your plan of further studies.

Could you share which HKU course your relative was admitted on the strength of his/her IB score of 30?

What is the equivalent of IB score 30 to HKDSE or AL?  As I remember, it is like 3A?? Not sure, but it is not a low equivalent.

For those local schools with better IBD results than HKDSE, I believe it is to certain extent related to the selection of students into the 2 schemes.  There are many more students taking HKDSE than IBD in HK, majority of HKDSE students are not qualified for universities.  If the quota of non-jupas remains to be 20%, the competition of IBD students will be more intense in the future as more and more schools send students to take IBD.  For now, students have to work very hard to get IB score of 35+ if they want to enter some more desirable faculties.
IBD is nothing easy, of course you can send your kids to take IBD if they are more confident with taking it than HKDSE.

The quota for Non-Jupas is about 20% of the places available. Since each year the Us may admit about 10% of its places for Mainland applicants, so the remaining places for IBD applicants and others are around 10% only. This year each of CU and HKU has admitted more than 320 Mainland applicants.

If we use UCAS points as a reference (which was prepared by a group of educational experts in UK after studying different programme over a period of years), it is easy to make the comparison of IB scores and HKDSE.

IB 30 (for 6 subjects and TOK) is equivalent to 392 UCAS points.

For 6 subjects of HKDSE, four subjects of "4" and three subjects of "3" is equivalent to 400 UCAS points.

I think it is a good comparison.

I made an error: 4 subjects of "4" and two (not three) subjects of "3" is equivalent to 400 UCAS points.

Thanks, but interestingly, universities only count 4 subjects of HKDSE or HKAL, for IBD, will they also look at the scores of Eng, Chinese, Maths and one selective more heavily instead of looking at an average of the 6 subjects?
For IBD, score 4 out of 7 is only a pass, but in HKDSE, score 2 out of a scale of 7 from 1 to 5** is already a pass...so is it easier to pass in HKDSE?  Or do you mean HKDSE is more difficult than IBD?  I doubt it.

Since there is no more local AL, let us focus on the HKDSE and IB.

The minimum entrance requirement for local Us on the strength of HKDSE is 3322 plus two subject of "2" from electives. In other words, you need the score of 6 subjects to decide whether you are entitled to make an application to local Us.

In case of HKU, you can see that they would consider the higher score of 5 subjects (out of the 6 best) and some faculty would require the scores of 6 subjects. If you do not have an aggregate of score 20 (based on the best 5), it is unlikely that you are offered a place by HKU.

In case of CU, you can see that the minimum score for an interview (medicine course) is 5 subjects of score "5*" - a minimum aggregate score of 30.

In case of IB, the standard offers by different Us (both local and overseas, not US) would be based on an overall IB score plus a minimum score from HL subjects. So you need a minimum score (based on 6 subjects plus TOK) to satisfy the first conditions before you would be assessed based on your score of HL subjects.

In other words, in my views, all Us would consider the scores of 5 to 6 best subjects from the result of HKDSE and the scores of all 6 subjects from IBD.

For medicine, the IBD score required is 40+, so more or less equal to HKDSE's requirements of five 5*... so no matter studying which exam, need to get the same good results... in my opinion, since the quota of non-Jupas for local IBD students is a lot lower than HKDSE , taking HKDSE maybe more economical and beneficial.

Now I answer your query as to the passing rate of HKDSE and IBD.

Roughly the percentage of obtaining a "2" or above in HKDSE is in the region of 75% for most subjects.

For IBD, the percentage of obtaining a "4" or above is in the region of 75% to 85% for most subjects (whether HL or SL).

From the statistics, I am of view that the difficulty in obtaining a "2" in HKDSE or a "4" in IB is more or less similar although a "2" is not allocated any UCAS points.

Higher LevelStandard LevelCore requirements*
GradeTariff pointsGradeTariff pointsGradeTariff points
71307703120
6110659280
580543140
450427010
320311

From the above table, you can see that a "4" of HL is allocated 50 UCAS points and a "4" of SL is allocated a 27 UCAS points.

A "3" of HKDSE is allocated 40 except maths which is allocated 25 for the compulsory and 40 for the extended part. So a "3" of HKDSE is of 13 UCAS higher than a "4" of SL of IBD but 10 UCAS points lower than a "4" of HL of IBD.

I hope the above will give a scientific analysis of the two examinations results.

Agree. Admission to BA course is relative easy. My son's classmate was admitted to a BA program of one of the top 10 UK university on the strength of BCC GCE-AL 3 years ago.

Agree. If you aim is not studying overseas, HKDSE appears to be a good choice. If you have good results, you can study locally or be admitted to overseas elite college. My D's ex-classmate (studying in one of the top girl school in Kowloon) is admitted to an Ivy league college based on her HKDSE curriculum.

How come Ivy leagues still need DSE results?

點評

Shootastar  US colleges would not admit a student on the strength of the result of HKDSE because the offer is given ahead of the result. It will give an offer on the performance of your HKDSE curriculum.  發表於 12-7-27 15:10

While IB could provide a good education but not all students could afford to pay $50,000 to $150,000 annually. Even if you could afford to pay, the competition for an IB place is very keen in deed.

I still think financial resource is important but not the most critical one. Understand what is IB before considering it or not.

Some schools provide IB in a reasonable cost, of course, may have a few years to demonstrate their performances and deliverables.
