the book - freakanomics? said that there were a few factors affecting children's performance, mum and dad joiningPTA was one of them.

The six positive factors for a child’s success in school are:

1.The child has educated parents. (What's the level? Bachelor, Master or PhD? One or both?)

2.The parents have high socio-economic status. (Middle or upper-middle classes or above?)

3.The parents are involved in the PTA. (Not necessary.)

4.The mother was at least 30 at the time of her first child’s birth. (Agreed, the chance for other genetic problems also hign. I will say high risk, high return. Harvard did an longitudinal research about this, if my memory don't fool me, the findings are the emotional maturity of mom and the financial stability of the family.)

5.The parents speak English at home. (Not necessary, all the time or 50/50.)

6.The child has many books at home. (Partially agreed, how about parents? I will say "The family has many books at home.")

I know the correlation, I just add more thoughts of those "findings".

Anyone knows the original survey details?

I guess this 27 nations research has similar approach as the findings from awah112 except the age of mother:

Family scholarly culture and educational success: Books and
schooling in 27 nations

http://www.rodneytrice.com/sfbb/articles/home.pdf

5.1. Model

We assume that children’s education is a function of parents’ scholarly culture, family background, and national characteristics:

Education
= b1 + b2 ln Parents Books +
b3 Parents Education +
b4 Fathers Occupation +
b5 Father Owner +
b6 Father Petit Bourgeois +
b7 Father Supervisor +
b8 Male +
b9 Ln Parent Books × Parents Education +
b10 Eastern Europe +
b11 ln GDP15 + e

Detail description of variables answered some of my previous questions in post #51.
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Annie40,

Thank you for sharing. I didn't know our library is such up-to-dated. I've made the reservation.
