Clearly you have not had your 國民教育. That is why you don't know how to show respect for senior citizens by exactly not mentioning the fact that they are senior citizens. Therefore, when you address me, you can try doing it without "citizens".
You post reminded me of my younger days as a backpack traveller with my hushand all over China.
Most university students in US (including my daughter) have to study American History and Government irrepctive of their majors. In Hong Kong, we can actually include 國民教育, if really necessary, as part of liberal studies. Or we can prescribe Chinese History as a compulsory subject for all secondary students, even in senior forms..
