But one thing in common; they all worked they butts off (pardon my language) to get into these universities. They reason they were motivated to work hard was that they had seen so many successful examples around in their school. They knew that given efforts they could achieve similarly. Going to a good university is something they have been conditioned to take for granted. On the contrary at a more ordinary school, going to a top university is very often seen as an exception and there are just not too many examples around to be benchmarked against.
Most researchers have established that self esteem is the key factor contributing to one's academic success, given equal intelligence. Very often a kid's self esteem is linked, sadly, to his sociological background, and, luckily for some less privileged students, to the school he goes to.
Eviepa's balancing strategy is that he relies on the little universe he is creating at home around her daughter. No matter what excuses, falling out of the elite class at a CMI school is a serious warning signal on the way to a seat in a local university.
But it usually is a good thing to encourage the kid to stretch his limit.
