I think it really depends on individual preference. Although my English standard is not high, I still prefer to read European history in English. It will be a torture for me to read world history in Chinese. For me, 'Communism', 'Hitler' & 'French Revolution' are more natural than 共產主義, 希特拉 and 法國大革命. Probably due to the fact that I studied world history in English since secondary.
Individual preference是有可能的,但這只會是極端情況,普遍都會是閱讀中文比閱讀英文佳。我不排除,真的有香港學生會覺得Cultural Revolution比文化大革命來得順眼;Dr Sun 會比孫中山來得親切;「師夷之長技以制夷」、「大茶黃葉足以制夷人於死命」、「超英趕美」、「實踐是檢定真理的唯一標準」的英文版本比原文好懂,但這只是特例,不是普遍例子。
同樣地,你問一個小六生甚麼是「共產主義, 希特拉 and 法國大革命」,他們起碼聽過中文名稱,但'Communism', 'Hitler' & 'French Revolution'則要用點功夫才可記牢。
記得在預科時,我偶爾會拿著中文篇寫的世史,尤其是王增才的《西洋近世史》(基本上是抄襲David Thomson的《Europe Since Napoleon》)作消閑書看。我通常以一個閱讀報紙,優優閑閑的態度看,每小時閑閑地看三十頁。我相信,在當時的香港大學歷史系,讀《Europe Since Napoleon》的話,大部分學生都沒有這個速度。你相信嗎?
