Currently the definition of autism is a collection of behavioral symptoms, and it is classisfied as a developmental disability or disorder.  This over simplication does not account for the many differences in the neurological presentation of children within the autism spectrum, and certainly does not account for the symptoms in the other organ systems.  Whatever the root cause, autism affects a fundamental and critical part tumor a headache.  Autisms is merely one symptom of an underlying disease process that affects the immunological system, the gastrointestinal system, and the toxicological system, as well as the neurological system.

Chap 5   Autism is a Disease, Not a Disability


Autism: Environmental illness
"As in most diseases, coupling genetic predisposition with environmental factors raises the risk.  For example, a postive family history of heart disease is a significant risk factor, but when you add environmental insults such as smoking, obesity, poor diet, etc., the cardiac risk rises substantially.  I believe that autism works in a similar way.  Evidence shows a higher rate of autoimmune disease in the families of autistic children.  This suggests a genetic predisposition in the immune system of children with austism spectrum disorders."
