各位,

係時候要加入你地SPC大家庭喇. 今日呀仔考埋佢小學生涯最後一個校內試. 我又開始要佈署下升上中一既野.

有幾樣野想問:
1) Maths係咪好深? (我聽呀仔D同學仔mami話好深), 要唔要搵定暑期數學班?
2) F.1留級率係咪高? (聽聞有10+ 人要repeat F.1)
3) 我想呀仔參加Boys Scout, 不過佢小學成績好一般, 我有D擔心如果佢做左boys scout, 會唔會冇時間溫書.
4) 註冊日係咪有舊書平賣? (如果全部買新書既話都好甘下!)
5) 我呢個summer holiday點樣可以幫個仔準備上F.1等佢可以快D適應?

Dear Teresa,


1.  Maths is always not easy in any school.  Our family's solution is doing more maths exercises.

2.  Last year, 5 or 6 boys were unable to get promotion to S2.  However, it might not be a bad thing to do S1 again in order to build a firmer foundation for the remaining years.  

3.  It seems that the Scout does not select S1 new members by their academic abilities, anyway, everyone is new comer with no track record.  Both Scout & Red Cross compete for new members, and they thirst for any new members and the S1 boys can judge which org is suitable for themselves.  I would say passing the scout swimming test is more important than academic abilities, all boys must pass that test, not an easy one.

4.  Yes, there is used books sale, and the sale is organized by the Student Association, not the school.  

5.  Do some readings, both Chinese & English, and may be some maths exercises as well.  Chinese is more difficult when comparing with the PS days.

Don't worry too much, S1 should be a honeymoon year.

Dear Teresa,

Welcome!  My son is F.1 and hope you find the
following useful :

1.  Maths is quite difficult because the teachers won't ask you to finish all exercises in the book.  They kept on giving supplementary ex. with answers and that really depends on whether you have time to finish on your own.
I remember my classmaster told me that this year 1st term exam, almost 60 students in F.1 failed in the Maths exam which was the worst among past years.  He commented that our boys this year were the most careless boys compared.  
2.  As for English, the English teachers also commented that our 1st term exam was more difficult than previous years but the result is quite good.  Maybe that was because they selected their own students last year.
3.  Chinese, as Hogwarts mentioned, was the most difficult subject for my son to handle.  Work harder on the composition.
For the summer holidays, I think relax to prepare for the F.1 because starting October, quizes next end and exam comes in Jan.  You won't enjoy your Christmas starting the Secondary school days.

Hi Teresa,

1. Math is a bit difficult, so let your son does a lot of exercises. Besides, it is your son's responsibility to finish the Math assignment and the workbook, so do not expect the Math teacher to check the workbook as if your son was still in Primary school, get it? If you like, I can pm you what exercises my son did in his past years. These are the same exercises the tutorial classes (outside the school) give.
2. The repeation rate is around 5%. I was told that every year the parents of the last 10 ranking of students will be asked to see if they really want their son to repeat.
3. My son is a boy scout. He can learn so many stuffs from boy scout, besides they have outdoor activities. As for a F1 boy scout, there isn't much to do. So you just let him try a year to see if he likes it or not.

My son is going to St. Paul's S1 too.  I'm worrying about of the Maths as he comes from Chinese Primary School.

Forgot to tell you that after your son starts S1, the school will give him a userid and password for the school's intranet. You can access the intranet the past exam paper for some subjects like Math, Computer, Integrated Science.

Yes, usually the boys, who are good in 普通話, are also good in other subjects.

Dear all,
I heard from my son that there is 精英班 in F.2, is it correct? Is it all Chinese lesson in 精英班 teach in 普通話?
I found that Chinese subject is very difficult and hard to improve. How do you/your son improve Chinese?
Did your son go to the summer English trip? Can they improve their English?

Hi sumsummummy,

According to the school there is no 精英班 in each form. The 精英班 your son is talking about should be the普通話班. As said before, boys who are good at 普通話 are good at other subjects most likely. In my experience, the best two classes with top scores boys are from the two 普通話班.

Besides, Chinese is a very difficult subject. As with English, all languages needed to be practiced and praticed and practiced. Read more books in the spare time helps.

時間9am-12:30pm, 2pm-3:30pm

In 2010-11, there are 3 普通話 classes in S2.

新學年F.2有三班普通話班,排99名內可選擇是否入讀,阿囝已知可以讀普通話班

Hi sumsummummy,

My son said he had to adjust the medium of instruction at the start of the school term, but after a while, he was ok. Still, Chinese is a very difficult subject, my guess is to review and review.
When boys getting to S2 or S3, they think they are old enough. Actually most boys think they have grown a lot when they start secondary school. You may try to let go bit by bit, but mind you, for academic, in my experience, you still have to follow what they are doing in school. And try to help if necessary. During S1, it is the honeymoon year, but do not let them start a habit of watching TV or playing computer games in the afternoon. When they have time we should still ask them to go to the library or go with them together and read. It does not matter English books or Chinese books, as long as they have to read more.
