I think both of them are correct depending on what you want to describe.
In case you use "were friendly", it means the animals may not be friendly today, tomorrow or the other time other than yesterday. They might only be friendly yesterday.
However, if you use "are friendly", it means the animals are ALWAYS friendly, not only at the moment that you visited yesterday. It has a meaning of ALWAYS!! They were not only friendly yesterday when you saw them but they are friendly all the time.
If you teach you kids using the past tense in primary school, I would recommend you to use "were" .
