i think even for adult, it's tough to have phonics course and putonghua class one after the other. It's because the same set of alphabets produces 2 very different sets of sounds.
For example:
In English, we all know the sound of "you". But in Putonghua, "you" is 有 and 友; and the sound is very different from the one in English.
In English, "ran" is the past tense of run. But Putonghua "ran" in the 2nd tone is 然後的 "然". Of course the sounds are very different.
In English, "re" is a prefix e.g. repeat, review, remove. In Putonghua, "re" is 熱 in the 4th tone... so as the sounds are different.
As the sounds of the vowels and the consonants in English are very different from 普通話的聲母及韻母, 但他們卻以同樣的英文字母代表; therefore, 個人覺得孩子們會較易混淆. 故可考慮k3 to p1學phonics, 有了根基後再接觸普通話拼音... just a thought to share...
Cheers,
