thanks for sharing and updating my information.  The reason why I say China use(d) British English is that my American peers classified HK and mainland Chinese students as British English users.  Perhaps these American country folks are outdated.

As to American history and development, I know already as I teach American history and culture. I just want to add that the ancestors of the Americans were the Anglo-Saxon stocks dated early 1600s, and the evolution and exportation of American style was motivated in part to the desire to be exceptional and different from the Old World--an expression of American exceptionalism and Pax Americana.   

Perhaps I am old-fashioned, I would prefer to begin with the British origin while keeping an eye on the force of Americanization.
