New student 2008 - can you tell me more about SFA!

Like the other parents, I had applied many private school for my daughter. But she is only accepted by SFA.

My daughter was born in late Dec, 2002.

Now, I am really afraid she cannot catch up.

would you all mind to tell me---
- is the Chinese difficult or not?
( I understand SFA is good in English, my daughter is very good in Eng but poor in Chinese!)

- lots of Chinese homework?

- is other subjects are in English? e.g. computor? music? religion?

- any swimming team? ( my daughter is good in swimming, too)

我囡囡亦入咗,但同時又被居住區域的地區名校收咗,二選一不知如何是好?
1. 有人話聖芳濟的功課好多,每日要做到10-11點,我怕囡囡應付不來
2. 有人指聖芳濟有分資優班與普通班,資優班的待遇較好
3. 我家信元朗,返學方法是一大考慮,囡囡會否很辛苦,有無經驗家長指教一下,或給我一些私人校巴的資料
4. 收生時要考筆試,相信入得的必是精英學生,但全是精英競爭會否很大,我又不希望子母為了學業壓力而失去了童年生活,未知學校會否為每一個學生分名次,學校又怎樣照顧這群精英的學習差異?有無sfa的家長指點一下

My daughter has already registrated.

how about you?

Having read the letter, SFA use Putongwa to teach chinese as a media, I am afraid my child cannot catch up.

do I need to find any couse beforehand?

是否需要找普話課程給自己的子女,要視乎他們的接受能力,如果能聽得懂基本的普通話已是可以,不同再為他們增加壓力,如果用普通話教中文,夜長日久,他們用普通話接收及表達應無問題,最怕是你們怕了學習
以我小朋友為例,他只可以聽得一點點,但他很有動力去聽去講,我們平日有機會也會用普通話交談,再加上普通話教中文,應是無問題的

sfa 是沒有資優班, 所謂資優班, 只是一些學生在資優測試中滿130分以上, 因而參加資優課程, 這些課程是在課外進行的, 如星期六上午, 與正常課程分開, 資優學生在正常課堂時間與普通學生一樣上課。一級四班, 沒分好班或差班。

There is not so many homeworks but you should count
the time and manage his time too.

English Standard is high and they should read indepandent during doing english papers or exes.  Their reading abilities is very high and spelling is very strong.

May I know more about
the teaching medium in SFA? Putonghua/English / Cantoness.  Specially, General Studies is taught in english and they have to learn a lot of english vocab.

You should pre-study at home every week.

Basically, they always study themself and finish homework alone.  You just check his homework and e-homeworkk everyday.

Putonghua speaking well, english understanding is high.
Reading programme is good.
English Dictation is hard.

But they all want to get 100% and active in school.  
A lot of extra activities....

So far, he feels happy and enjoy the sfa school life very much.  His teachers and classmates are very smart and creative too.

Sometimes, he pretented his teachers and teach me at hom.  hahah!  Never put a lot of presure on them and ouself.  Just let them to do everythings they want and lead them to do with you.

They will teach you at home.  They remember what did they learn at school.  Just ask them to study every day by himself.

any school bus if they have activities after school?

你大可放心, Religious Knowledge 係非常之淺, 不用擔心.
其他閒科大多都係bilingual,不用太緊張, 小朋友都可以應付得來的.

Study is a long investment and your girl should be very smart coz she passed the first step yet.

If you can take care her everyday , it is not a big problem.
The marks between the first and the last only 10 more marks.  Never put the place  at the top , to see how much she really understood and learnt.

During last few month, my son learnt a lot and love the his teachers so much.  Tonight, he asked  me to guess who are his favour teachers again....

I am concern that the marks between the first and the
last is only 10 marks' range.  As I know, only the top 3 of the class will be known.  Am I right?  My daughter will
study at SFA this coming September.  As I am a working mom, I am quite worry about her learning   Actually,
how many homework per day and how many tests/
dictation per week?  Please share.

We all want to be the top 3/   So all parents work so hard for their kids.

Not so many homeworks.

sfa 絕不用成績來分班, 另一間私校宣道就會在p5開始用成績來分班學中英數, 這種事在sfa 絕不發生。每級四班係平均分佈, 課程及進度都係一樣。  我家孩子已讀至五年班了, 亦有被老師選入參加資優活動。 那些活動跟學校課程完全無關, 你參加了不會令你成績變好, 主要係認識自我, 發拙自我, 跟別人合作那一種活動。我孩子就好喜歡參加, 但他都有兩個朋友仔選擇不參加, 因不想課後留校。
一間學校看重資優的話, 她對學生的表現會更敏感, 亦會更懂處理呢種孩子的需要。我認為那是一種bonus, 那是學校的心思, 而校長亦講過, 資優教育已融入全校, 你看看各科功作紙的編寫都會知。

The school report will show the ranking from 1st-100th of the whole form.  
The ranking will not be shown after 100th.
The marks between the first and the last of the whole
form is more than 10.  School's exam papers  are not  straight forward especially Maths. All the papers are well designed that can show you what's your child's strength and weakness.  
The newest banding information of SFA is as follows:
band 1: 81.1
band 2: 18.9
band 3:  0

School will not post the banding figure on their website because of the new policy of EMB. But all insiders will know about it.  *.<
So your child is still band 1 even if she ranks 120th in 150 students.

My son and I love this school. That's why I type! If you want to know anything about SFA,  I will try my best to help.

多謝哂妳既分享,我囡囡將90%會係9月入SFA既小一,我老公就係想俾阿囡多D機會選中學而放棄另一間一條龍既私校,我當初都有猶豫,BUT見到其他SFA家長既分享,加強左我既信心,希望阿囡努力學習,我唔駛佢好TOP,正如我D朋友話,入到SFA,中中間間已經比係出面好好多,我而家開始俾阿囡上SFA既FORMER TEACHER係出面教既英文班,剛剛上左一堂,班中其他既小朋友都係會9月入SFA既,俾我既感覺佢地好SMART,唔知妳有無咩心得呢

Hi Sandy,

I think your preparation for your girl's primary life  is much better than mine to my son several years ago. I remembered it's your husband's choice to choose SFA, and with the help of the father, your girl is much better armed.

My child's kindergarten life was just full of fun. I never taught him grammar before primary 1. You see what kind of parent I am. But my child's reading ability and learning attitude is very good, that's why I let him study in SFA.  And he really prospers in school. So just bear in mind: reading ability and learning attitude is crucial to a child's  performance in class. If you want to have a happy life, time management is also critical. My child has a lot of time to read after finishing homework, and I like to dine out at the evening nearly four times a week. My child can still manage to practice violin and piano during weekdays.
