Mr Wu is definitely good. My girl started to learn at 4.5 yrs old and finish the 1.5 yrs abacus course at 6. Then my younger boy start at 5 yrs old and also finished the course by now. I planned to let them learn it at k2 and finished it by K3 as kinder kids hv more time to practice.
One serious advice, parents MUST prepare to practice with the kids everynight around 10-20 mins. If parents don't hv time and patient to practice with kids, you shouldn't enrol for it cos it is really tough.
One different theory of Mr Wu's abacus to the other abacus course that I agree very much is : Mr Wu's abacus based on listening not reading ie kids do the abacus based on listening to adult to speak out the number, per Mr Wu, listening can force the kids to concentrate otherwise they can't follow the number and parents will know it at once. But if you let kids to do the abacus exercise (like the other abacus course) by reading the number by themselves, they will just dreaming around and do it slowly and not efficiently. By training their concentration by listening, i think it is also useful in dictation in primary.
One more, Mr Wu do like an educator rather than a merchant/businessman/money maker. If your kids can't catch up with the standard ie not pass the test by each course end, he cannot promote to upper class, you may either choose to quit or to repeat. Mr Wu says no need to waste time and money if kids can't catch up.....thus you will found fewer and fewer kids when promoted to upper class......
As far as I know, abacus course only train for abacus, concentration, (i think can also help brain development) but NOT in understanding the concept of math. There should be another course in Mr Wu's to study for understanding the concept of math...
Above are my experience based on my 2 kids + 3 years learning at Mr Wu's fm 2004 to mid of 2007. As both of my kids already finished the course, i don't know whether my info is still update or not. |
