Visa requirement for study (less than 6 mths) in UK university

I have surfed on the internet. I gather that if the study is less than 6 months, the student can enter via Standard Visitor Visa. Since holder of HKSAR passport does not require any visitor visa to visit UK, the student only needs to apply for ETA.
不用apply for student visa, 只申請平時旅遊性質用的eta, 我有d不放心. 英國政府網站的wordings 又不是很清晰。請問有沒有同學是去英國讀書（duration is less than 6 mths), 沒有apply student visa, 而入境時是ok沒問題.
Of course when there is offer, we will check with the UK university on the visa requirement.
