All 3 are gd schools w solid Mandarin. CIS is more difficult to get in, not bcos the selection criteria is tougher per se. It’s bcos the school is targeting a specific class mix which puts local kids fluent in English but without alumni priority at a disadvantage. For each cohort, it targets to hv a certain % of native English speakers, a certain % of native Mandarin speakers and a certain % from minority nationalities (eg Swedish). Since alumni kids are all fluent in English, they tend to fill up the English speaking quota, leaving very little quota for non-alumni kids fluent in English.
Most of the non-alumni kids that I know who get into Reception / Y1 are native Mandarin speakers or have minority passports.
CDNIS doesn’t have this issue bcos it doesn’t target a specific % of class to be from Mandarin speaking families.
VSA doesn’t have this issue bcos the school was only founded in 2007 so alumni don’t have kids at school age yet.

CIS Reception interview: 3 teachers for 5-6 children. The 3 teachers speak Eng/Cantonese/Mandarin. Activities are all age-appropriate, eg building blocks, beading, hopping on a foot, drawing and painting. They tend to like kids who can communicate well.

"down to earth children" - what's your expectation in this respect?

CIS is better among these 3

VSA should have more mandarin than CDNIS as its bilingual school and more chinese families?

CDNIS also has bilingual track which is 50-50.
For CDNIS, English and Chinese teachers will teach on alternate days, i.e. one day full in English and one day full in Mandarin, while for VSA, English and Chinese teachers are co teaching in the same classroom. Not sure the way in CIS.

Its way too difficult to get a place in CIS
If the kid is in Victoria kindergarten, is it better to stay and wait for VSA or change to CDNIS? Thanks

VSA releases offer on May, so it should be understandable for parents to apply for other IS as alternative or back up.

P1 or lowest grade of IS is very competitive, and seats are limited too. It is much better to enter their kindergarten and directly promote to the primary.
A number of Victoria’s parents apply the mass intake year of IS kindergartens during K1 or K2, and will leave if they get offer.
