Hi I was wondering opinions of WF Joseph Lee Primary School in Tin Shui Wai.
I cannot read or write Chinese so I am limited to information I can find online about local schools.

I would like to know parents experience with this school and if it is worthwhile to apply. Are kids happy at school, is there a lot of homework, progression prospects (in terms of secondary school ect ect)

My key reasons to looking at this school are that I live in Tuen Mun and would prefer to be relatively local to school (cutting down transport times ect). I would also like my son to learn more Chinese so would prefer him to start P1 at a more local school to have more exposure to the language

I'm also interested to know other schools in the Yuen Long, Tin Shui Wai, Tuen Mun area where we could look at?

Thanks for the help

Kids are happy in this school. Not too many HW . The school has so many activities for students to apply. You can also consider Yuen Yuen if you live in Tuen Mun.

In my opinion, before you choose a primary school, it is the best you should have a plan/idea that how you want your kid in study?
Do you think your kid will stay in HK to study secondary school and even university?

What is the curriculum you want your kid to study?

You better think all of the above questions first.

Aww great thanks for the advice. Do you know where the kids from Joseph Lee / Yuen Yuen usually progress in terms of secondary school?

The plan I have at the moment is for my children to be happy in a primary school at the moment and learn more local culture and language.
My son is currently in Creative Kindergarten and whilst he loves it there but I know that a lot of HK parents worry about future education prospects. Because it's still early years, I personally would prefer to let me kids be kids and not have the extra worry about university just yet.

In terms of where my son will study in the future, it will depend if we are indeed still in Hong Kong for secondary school - many things can happen withing 6 years of primary school we may find that we have a work transfer to somewhere else, or may even find that we go down the international route in the future.

You can check on both schools website to find the details of secondary school. For my personal opinion, if you focus more on the English language and academic , you should better choose YYPS . If you focus on more school activities and Mandarin, you can choose Joseph Lee.

I prefer Yuen Yuen much more than than Joseph Lee, especially in terms of academic result and competitivity in secondary school hunting. If you decided to go for local secondary school, I even think tier 1 subsidized school via luck draw is better than Joseph Lee, perhaps higher chance to get into band 1A-B secondary schools.

Thanks for this, it is so difficult finding in depth information for local schools in English!
Do you know what the homework is like at Yuen Yuen?

Also my main reason to ask about Joseph Lee is that their website says that there is NCS support (my sons Chinese isn't great). Is this the case at Yuen Yuen?

You may need to work on your son’s Chinese if you target at Yuen Yuen. Even for Lutheran, offer is not given to those weak in Chinese but excellent in English.

My kids are not studying in Yuen Yuen, so I cannot comment about the homework. But i think it is one of the best schools among Tuen Mun / Yuen Long areas given the language environment and academic results.

For Joseph Lee, last year I know quite a few withdrew the offers and chose govt school. If you have to go to overseas, Joseph Lee is good enough. Just if you go for local path, it is better to plan ahead for secondary schools.

You can refer to the top100 HK primary schools below.
小學排名2021

Joseph Lee ranked 65, unfortunately YYPS is not ranked in the list.

FYI you may Google translate this local News about how YYPS educate the children.

Thanks for this. This is good to know my reasoning for Joseph Lee that it's not too crazy academic (whilst my son isn't stupid, I don't want him to be under too much pressure) . Judging by the advice on this thread I guess we will try for Joseph Lee but will need to brush up on his Chinese anyway

The best school for NCS nearby should be St Margaret’s Coed in Sham Shui Po
Another one is SWCS YMCA, also in SSP

I like this school. Of course Yuen Yuen is better in term of academic but for the philosophy behind, I think Wf Joseph Lee Primary school is worth taking a look especially your kid is from Creative K. For Yuen Yuen, it is just a traditional primary school with more resource and emphasis on English. But now the new principal changed the direction and make it no different from a Gov sub P.S. However WFJ still maintaining the style regarding teaching and caring about the development of kid not just academic.

P.S. My kid is not studying in WFJ but a close friend is.

Let see what Yuen Yuen is today: https://news.mingpao.com/ins/%E6 ... 8%E6%9A%B4%E3%80%8D

Thanks for the reply. This is great to hear! Children nowadays have so many extra things to learn that I think a school like WFJ would be good for my son!
Out of interest, do you know how many schools we should apply for as a safe number? I've been speaking to some locals and they say like 5 schools. Coming from the UK, applying to 5 schools seems somewhat excessive?

The Chinese papers in the primary schools are not easy, even for local kids whose mother tongue is Cantonese.
If you want to send your kid to a local school using Chinese as the medium of instructions, equip him with reading skills (Chinese) and spoken Cantonese before attending the interviews. Also, think about what kind of support (in Chinese learning) your family may give your kid.
