Programme: BSc Maths
Is there anyone know how gd for one should score in the DSE exam that one can get an offer from UofT and McGill?

Is Waterloo gd at Maths programme? Any other recommendations and why?
My son doesn’t want UBC as there are too many Chinese.

No idea these day for dse. All of them are very good, even ubc is very good. The best is Waterloo, it's math or computer science is the best in Canada. So why not apply all 4 and see which one to accept. Nothing wrong with many Chinese studying, all of them have Chinese, be open minded when u going to university.

Not sure how the application process these day, back then I applied Faculty of Science, once accepted u just choose to take your major courses. Not sure Waterloo these day, just choose faculty of science program if u can and choose those math, computer science or statistic courses once accepted. Same strategy applies to most undergraduate Canadian or American colleges.

My girl got 27 (Best 5) of 2019 DSE. She received offer from UofT and Waterloo before DSE result release. Hope it can help.

J-smama,
Congrats to yr daughter! So, which one is she studying now? That's very encouraging to receive an offer from both UofT and Waterloo. I always think it is very hard to get an offer from UofT.
Way back to my son's case 5 years ago, he was rejected by both unis (Mechanical Engineering) and we have no idea why as he score sounds good ( 36) in DSE !!!.

Thanks for your sharing which is helpful to my daughter. Her predicted grade is around 32-34 with hope.

My daughter is studying in UofT Scarbough and takes Coop Statistic (Quantitative Finance).

What does

Why not study at St George campus?

My daughter loves Maths very much since kindergarten. She prefers Pure Maths not others. But I wonder would it be too limited to her . QF is a competitive and one of popular program as far as I know.

Would u mind to tell the estimate budget to cover 4 years studies in Canada?

What does

She choose Scarbough campus because it has coop program there. Coop program is very useful for career path later. My daughter needs to take 3 work terms under her program. It will take 4 to 5 years to finish her degree.

OH well, Waterloo math and computer science is the best in Canada, it also has a good co-op program, for sure they have that in computer science, not sure in math. I am an old cake here. Back in my days Waterloo was the best. STILL the best today I guess. NOThing wrong with UT, Macgill or even Ubc. If I need to make a choice I would choose Waterloo >MacGill>UT>Ubc... It's all to do with reputation and personal preference.

For ontario, you can apply to as many "programs" as you like. They charge you a fee for each application.
If you prefer, you can apply to 5 programs of the same university.
For example, (1) chemistry of Uof T (2) physics of U of T, (3) biology of U of T, (4) xxx of U ofT, (5) xxx of U of T
Each choice is treated separately.

Waterloo Math is very good. Large department with lots of resources. Waterloo has one of the best co-op programs. For Math, definitely Waterloo. McGill would be my second choice. UBC and UofT would be on par.

Any comments on engineering/computer science of Waterloo? What about the entry requirements? (eg. IB score>40?) We used to know Waterloo and UoT are good, know not much about these programs at McGill,
Pls share.

The school has relaxed the numbers to 10 but still need to plan wisely, don’t want to spend too much effort on the application writing.

Hi. I have not come back to EK for a while. Is your son in Y12 yet?

Waterloo engineering and computer science is very good. Waterloo has a very good co-op program. Waterloo also has a very good incubator program for students. Many students get funds to do startups etc. Many became very successful entrepreneurs. Canadians are very practical and thus making Waterloo so popular. (Heard that Ryerson is also a good choice if one wants to get into co-op programs. Ryerson used to be a college and thus the curriculum is probably more career oriented. Thus might not suit students that are more academic.)

The entry requirements should be quite clear on the school website and on the OUAC website. Not many universities are willing to tell what their cut-offs are because I believe that can change with the number of applications they get each year (fewer people apply, may be they will lower their required cut-off). I am not sure about the cut-off for Waterloo engineering, but you should have high chance with a 38+.

My children did not apply to McGill but McGill always releases admission cut-off from the previous year on the website. And that serves a very good indicator of what Waterloo wants as well. I would believe Waterloo and McGill are probably very on par with admission. But I feel that McGill seem to be slightly more strict with grades than Waterloo.

UBC and U of T are a little different. They are very huge, and have much larger undergraduate intakes every year. Because of the size, they are a lot more lax in giving offers. But note that getting an admission ticket does not make it easy to strive. I heard from my son's friend (who is now U of T forth year) that a lot of people dropped out after first year.

Yes, my boy is Y12 and doing Maths & Physic HL. So he will look for engineering/computer science probably. Canada will be best for him as we hope that he could be offered with coop program and can stay there afterwards.

根據大學要求，印象中都係俾過去一兩年成績及自己中學出嘅DSE predicted grade。公開試好似只係IELTS 成績

Is that one must upload and submit the school transcript via "WES" for applying Ontario unis? I remembered we uploaded the school transcript strict to unis when at my son's time 5 years ago.

I found that the total application fee is pretty high compare to UK.
OUAC application min fee C$156 + Supplementary fee covers both UofT and Waterloo C$175+ WES C$2xx
it turns up C$5xx = HK$15xx ?? whilst UCAS only charge 16 pounds for 5 choices.
