Can't make a decision should stay in HK or study in UK for "Civil engineering" :

1/ Study in HKU (high chance)
    advantage : famous
disadv : general course in Yr 1 and need to ensure good result so to secure "Civil engineering' in Yr 2 as it
only accepts 25% intake - sounds risky or he will be forced to choose other subject he doesn't like,
               eg, mechanical engineering

2/ Study in UK
advantage : receive conditional offer from good branded University, like Leeds,Bath & Sheffield
and ensure to take "Civil Engineering" from Yr 1
and take 4 years course as "Master degree" instead of "Bachelor degree" in HKU
and to be trained more independently and widen his horizon which is good for him long run

How to make a decision ?? Pls help

What's your estimation of his ranking in DSE results for the HKU intake, not in the top 25%, the chance is slim. Then UK is a better option.

But when he graduated years later, what's the job market in civil engineering in HK or UK. If not, he still loves CE or look for something else.

Of course, I know many chartered CE not in civil field, also doing very well in other industries.

Depends on your financial budget, DSE grades prospective, future careers (CE graduates can also work in other sectors), the whole family's opinions...

Financial budget should be the first priority for consideration.
If money is not a problem, then I would choose UK.
But to be honest, I guess you need to wait for DSE results anyway.

My son guess his DSE results is around 34 (4+2) which he definitely can get a seat in HKU Engineering. However, he needs to take risk he may not get a place in civil engineering in year 2 if his yr 1 final result is not good enough - not guaranteed. That's why I am very hesitate to put him in HKU while for uk university, he can start to pick civil engineering from year 1 plus with a master degree for four year course.
financial pressure but v difficult decision to make .....

First, DSE results not even out yet.

Second, we are talking about only Year 1, and he already lost confidence with his performance?

May be he should just take the offer from UK (which again, is only conditional offer, subject to DSE results).

It should well be UK then HKU. CE requires no local experience as some other courses that overseas experience will sell better in looking for job after graduation worldwide.

my son chooses studied in HKU. 樓主, what is your final decision?

I think that studying in UK might be slight better because overseas study would enhance wider experiences in the future. Besides, Civil Engineer needs professionalism, being a Chartered Engineer will be a MUST for future development. UK graduate background would enrich the success rate.

If you cannot choose CE in HKU at his year 2, the career development for other engineering courses is quite limited in HK. Then you must enter CE at year 2, otherwise, you may consider to study aboard at year 2.

如果degree 係UK讀,咁一定要有master 先Charter到;如果degree 不是UK讀但屬於EC accredited, 咁就不需要master都得。

EC accredited courses also follow the Sydney and Washington Accords.

Just checked with EC website, a bit complicated, better check it out from the accredited courses database, not just Courses but also cut off years.
