My nephew studying in California got accepted and is deciding between these two. UC Santa Barbara offers full scholarship whereas Cornell costs about USD50k a year (tuition). My sister believes where he goes for his bachelor's degree isn't as important as grad school and UCSB is closer to home but she will let him choose. He plans to take biology. What do you think?

謝謝你的提醒，ivy league的名氣是很吸引的，不過我的家姐、姐夫偏向選擇加州大學，可能學費也是一個考慮。除了上述兩間外，UCSD亦是考慮之一，但要待recruit trip之後才知offer多少獎學金。

If money is a concern, then the answer is obvious. And from what you said, they probably also tend to choose UCSB right?
For people who wants to major in experimental sciences, I guess they would most probably consider grad school as well. In that case, a way to safe money is to attend UCSB (if they really offer that much scholarship/funds), work hard and then apply to ivy grad school.

I think if the kid is very smart and get very good grades in Cornell and no concern on money, then Cornell may be a good choice. But if the kid plans to go to grad school 100% sure, then UCSB is a more sensible choice.
Also UCSB has a CCB school which seems very interesting and works very closely with professors to do research, but not sure if there are any biology-related major in CCB.

You are right. But while he can apply for grad school later with ivy league colleges, we never know whether he will get the offer again. Does an ivy league degree really make a difference?

Thanks for the info mugtaitai. My sister didn't mention UC Berkeley so I'm not sure if they get an offer or not. Among those that offered, they have narrowed down to Cornell and two UCs as they don't want to go on too many recruit trips. If I were her, I would want to see more before deciding.

家人認為無需要使多甘多錢讀名牌大學都可以有好的發展，所以偏向選擇加州大學算了。
多年前我的另一個姨甥Columbia收了，但因經濟考慮，最後讀加州大學，畢業後公司供他在USC讀Master，UCSB再給他full ride & allowance讀PhD。他很滿意現在的工作，亦沒有後悔當年放棄讀Columbia的機會。

加州大學中，UCB係最top，入倒要與最top的同學競爭，要keep住高的GPA唔容易，有名的次選便是UCLA。我姨甥當年考10科AP(AP Scholar with Distinction)加埋近滿分的SAT成績，獲州政府發獎學金，但UCLA卻沒有offer獎學金，可能競爭太大。

姨甥去過UCSB的recruit trip後非常喜歡UCSB，加上免學費，差不多想立即口頭接受offer。上星期再去UCSD，同樣十分喜歡，他問interviewer為什麼他要選擇UCSD而不是UCSB時，對方為他分析說他的將來比partying更重要（UCSB是一間party school），UCSD的讀書風氣較認真，如果他準備主修Biology再入醫科的話，UCSD較強，更是適合，visit期間姨甥亦主動與一些Biology的學生傾談，加深對大學生活的認識，幾天後UCSD再提高了獎學金。他就這樣決定入讀UCSD。

不好意思，我有些不明白，我想問一下，今年UC application for first year 11月30日deadline, result 在明年3月公佈。而Cornell apply regular decision 明年才開始報 ！為何你的親戚現在11月就收到兩間的offer？

是這樣的，大學的recruiter每年也會向運動員招手，早在Grade11便開始邀請他們入讀，我的姨甥運動和讀書的成績也不錯，所以收到多間大學的offer。每個學生可以去五個recruit trip（三日兩夜），機票，食宿，活動全部由大學負責，需要獎學金的話最後需於十一月中前落實決定。

這是给學術以外成績的多一份肯定，當然學校亦希望藉此吸納優秀的運動員加入校隊。

說不上成就，但在南加州學界游泳錦標賽中，他得到兩項冠軍，在全國NCSA游泳錦標賽中，亦是finalist八名之內。至於學業，每天花上數小時練水之餘仍是Honor roll student已很不錯了。

以運動入美國名牌大學? 香港直接去都唔少例子。出名嘅有港隊女游手。早幾年男拔都有個打網球入咗哈佛。朋友個仔早二年以打網球入 John Hopkins。只要去到港隊A隊，讀書唔太差，學校有好嘅 reference, 就多好大機會入到美國名牌大學，有埋 scholarship。

優秀運動員的特質是意志力強, 不容易放棄, 個性也積極向前望的多. 再加上學業成績上佳, 取得名校學位和奬學金也是實至名歸.

代表香港參加奧運的泳手Geoffrey Cheah當年也入了Stanford。根據College Recruit的資料，全美排行前十名的泳手2017年有三個入UCB，兩個入Stanford。

當年李啟淦也是在夏威夷游泳比賽給UCB 教練 recruit 入了UCB.
